In Search of Winchester 231 Powder or good substitute!

We are pretty new to reloading, and started out with Winchester 231. We load 9mm, 45 acp and 38 special. Getting low on ammo and powder , and can't find any Win 231. I have read more than once that Hodgdon HP38 is basically the same powder. Is that true? Any suggestions?

We are in the same boat. I believe you are correct about the Hodgdon, unfortunately, I can't find that either.

If it helps you, some other powders that work in all the calibers listed are: Accurate Arms #2, Ramshot Zip, IMR7625, Alliant Unique, Hodgdon Universal, Winchester WSF, Alliant Power Pistol, VihtaVuori N330, AA#5, Hodgdon HS6.

Maybe you will get lucky and find something to substitute, Good Luck

A little while back, I was able to find HP38 (same as 231) at Hillside in Roanoke

i bought a 8lber of Promo(same as Red Dot) for $127.00 shipped/hazmat from Powder Valley........less than $16 a pound.....i have loaded 45's and 38's....great powder for the price....

Bullseye is also pretty versatile and a little goes a long way...might look for that too.

If youre not loading lead(HOT/SMOKEY), than titegroup does well...both powders are economical and meter very well(bullseye is the best).

+1 to Leo.. For the OP's loads, I use a lot of HS-6, and Power Pistol when HP-38/WW-231 is hard to come by...Bill..

Clay's would be an acceptable powder for those calibers, although I personally don't use it for 9mm currently.

I use Bullseye for my 9mm and .45 as mentioned earlier. I like simplicity with my pistol powders.

I have a new lb of 38 but I like 7625 even though not a lot of people use it.
