Quick question: Can you use a rifle chambered for the S&W 460 for Indiana deer hunting while using 454 Casull or 45 Colt ammo? The 454 and 45 are legal but the 460 is not. I couldn't find any info on the subject. Or would it be more hassle than it's worth. Thanks!

    Fireball168 is correct.

If you go that route, I'd be 100% absolutely positively sure that you don't have any loaded .460 ammo, nor ANY kind of brass case (expended or even prepped for reloading) on your person or in your hunting vehicle.

You do NOT want to mess with the Conservation Officers.

As of this year 2011 the 460 is legal. DNR allowed an increase in cartridge lenght to 1.8" from 1.625" Before this year 500 S&W was the biggest factory round. 460 S&W overal length is 1.8"

While technically not legal (it's not deer season yet) When the printed DNR regulations come out you will see it will be "legal" this year

Highly doubt that 1.8" cartridges will be legal for 2011 season. The new deer rule proposals just got approval from the NRC on Jan 11th, that is the fifth step of a 34 step process according to the DNR. Now they have to give time for public imput and conduct at least one public hearing. This will take most of this year to complete.

I wouldn't have a lot of confidence in the accuracy of a 45lc or 454 out of a 460 chamber.

A buddy of mine tried this this past year. He wanted to shoot 454's out of his 460 encore barrel but they would't hold a good enough pattern, the 460's on the other hand patterned great! So he used his ML barrel this year.

Now the guy at the local gun shop says he trimmed some 460 cases down for another guy and that guy loved them, but I don't know first hand so I can't back that up.

i beleive when the new regulations come out you can use that round there is a proposed increase of .02 which should be eneough for the 460 case length being 1.8

They can begin the public imput with me-NO!!:xmad: Well, I guess I should say there are some parts of it I am cool with and other parts I am not cool with. If they take it altogether without changes, then no.

A related question here. I've heard from numerous people that you can use virtually any caliber out of handgun in Indiana, just not a rifle. True or not true? I've never read any reg stating it was true, but I might have missed it.
