The bill also changes current four-year licenses to five-year licenses.

So, how does this work? Does my existing 4-year license get another year tacked on to the expiration date?

No more 4 year licenses, the five year replaced it last July. I don’t have word if the new five-year is NICS exempt as planned yet. You can have a lifetime license and a five year at the same time now.

What would be the point of having both?

In my opinion, that advantage will only materialize if/when they ever get the hoops jumped through that will make this new license the 4473 exempt version. And that would only be an advantage if you purchase lots of guns a year and/or you’re one of those folks that often get delayed or rejected by NICS.

I have heard an argument about using these as a way to lay ground work for making eventual constitutional carry a thing more likely. But someone’s going to have to go over that again...and maybe use smaller words so that I’ll understand that particular strategery.

Do you still have to pay the local fees and for fingerprinting?

Nothing at the moment, there is reciprocity talk about states that don’t currently accept our Life Larry accepting our 5 year, but that hasn’t happened yet, and if the Feds accept it, eventually, we can skip NICS, but right now, nothing.
