Can't protect mere property with lethal force,

Yes, we know. That's the law.

Problem is, that's not how it should be.
I mean, look at what they're saying... the vehicle was even "previously stolen".
Holy crap... a stolen vehicle... got stolen...? There seems to be an awful lot of steeling going on here.

Face it, if you could use deadly force to protect your property, there would, in fact... be much less theft.
MUCH less... violent, non-violent, opportunistic, every kind.

I'd like to recognize the shooter for performing a major service to the local community.

First, he took out a bad guy in a way that had it been a LEO, Indianapolis would be balls deep in riots hosted by BLM, antifa and general lefty snowflakes crying for defunding the police.

Second, he put his hard earned money (probably stolen too) back into the local economy by hiring counsel to escort his sorry ass to jail where he belongs.

Just my opinion, If we gotta have criminals, they need to more like this one and leave the innocent citizens be whilst the prey on each other.

OK, but do you have a gun that takes an hour, or a week from the perpetrator's life? That would be just.
Wow. No one except the thief is responsible for what happens after they decide to steal. Really after the CRIMINAL decides to do criminal things that disrupt others lives they alone bear the responsibility of the outcome. This isn’t legal advice I’m not a lawyer but THEY are the ones initiating the negative interaction. The level of what force is thrusted upon them isn’t a decision they get to make, it is a two player game and both people get a vote. There was a 0% chance of this guy getting shot had he not tried to car jack. As ASP says…… you pay the band you gotta dance the dance.

I’m sure there’s a way the situation could have been deescalated, but the perpetrator put himself in a bad position when he attempted to rob the man. I’m not justifying an attack, but you open yourself up by breaking the law and trying to take something that’s someone else’s.

Isn't that "car theft" and not a robbery?

I mean, the attempted theft was not predicated by a show/use of force that I saw.

The shooter had stolen the vehicle; that's a felony.
His trying to keep possession of the stolen vehicle is a continuation of committing that felony.
The person he shot died as a result of him continuing to commit a felony.
    Hence, felony murder.
