Unfortunately, they also had a corrupt and tyrannical government with a highly efficient secret police that was all too fond of disappearing people and torturing them to death. It wasn't all wine and roses.

What really got me was how the US government let US citizens remain captive for what, 400+ days because we didn't want to give up the Shah, because "He was a friend of the United States".

Many places are wonderful before the wackos take over. Years ago I dated a young lady from Lebanon. Her mother would describe Lebanon as a paradise, Switzerland of the Middle East, before the Civil War broke out.

Even Afghanistan was much different. Have you watched the Beauty Academy of Kabul? It starts off with life before the Soviet invasion.

Looks like they needed to be doing a heck of a lot more of it than they did seeing how things turned out.

The majority of people in Iran were quite glad to see the Shah go. Only people with a vested interest in the regime wanted him to stay in power. Things didn't go to hell over night in Iran, either. It took them quite a while to get to the government they now have.

I agree with the previous post. The CIA engineered an overthrow of the legimate freely elected prime minister and had the Shah installed in his place in the 50's. Gradually, the Shah let loose his secret police on the people.

Interesting to note, the spokesmen for the revolution that were on the tube almost nightly talking up the revolution were eventually executed by the regime that they were glorifying.
