I understand that it's effective, but these guys are probably working under duress.

I disagree. Even the smartest and most rational can still be compelled by a strong moral/religious argument. If these scientists have been raised to hate all non beleivers, and it is engrained in their being, then they would think what they are doing is right...

It should be pretty simple. Don't engage in terrorism, state sponsored or the other kind. The likelihood someone will want to assasinate you goes down exponentially.
