.40 guns are still common. It will stick around for quite a while. .380 and .38 special are still hanging on and .40 will be no different.
There are some smoking deals on .40 handguns right now. Good value if somebody is looking for a service sized handgun.

I think 45 is hanging around due to nostalgia and inertia but the fact is that it costs more to shoot and allows less capacity. I think time will catch up to it.
