Googling reveals little on the subject. What do you guys think? Do you think shooting 6X6 inch blocks of ice with a .22 or .38 is safe at 20 yards?

I shoot ice every single winter.
Water balloons (with food coloring in them) get plopped out on the deck to freeze...then the balloon gets cut off the ice ball to toss it up on the snowy berm.
BLASTINATION ensues, and it makes a terrific technicolor mess...with no clean up.

You can only shoot ice if you make a video of it for us. Or at least take pictures.

So everyone who shoots steel is....wrong?
Those targets are designed, if properly done, to deflect the lead toward the ground. I am just saying what the Indiana Hunter Education material advises. Again, Murphy's Law is alive and well. I shoot bowling pins but while doing so I must realize the bullet, once out of the muzzel, can take it's own course. Have fun shooting but be careful.

Nothing is assured in this world, but if you have a location where ricochet or shards of ice won't cause anyone else an issue, then it's as safe as shooting at steel targets. I do it all the time in the winter. Wear your eye pro.

This is excellent advice. I would have said something very similar.

I don't have time to find it now but isn't there a great video on the web somewhere showing two guys shooting the ice then finding the bullet nearby spinning in place a million miles an hour? Cool video showing the spin on a bullet but it also shows how the bullet does not break apart like it does against steel.
