    The G17 was Mr.Glock's 17th patent. The others G numbers that follow are in the sequence in which they were released. The numbers have nothing to do with size or caliber of the gun but only it's chronology in the Glock line.

    I was told it is the # of Patent Glock has gotten. (except knives)

    17 is glock's #17 awarded patent
    18 is glock's 18th...
    ect...

    It's their individual models in order of release. Glock made other items, outside of guns, such as mess kits, knives, grenade casings, etc... Someone told me once that the Glock model 4 or something was a curtain rod...

    They started with the Glock 17 being the 17th patent filed by Gaston glock.
    I believe beyond that, they just add one for the next model. the second being 18, then the compact(19).
    a few of the models are not imported, so it seems like they haven't filled all the numbers.
