I may have an opportunity to pick up both a Kentucky flintlock rifle and wheel gun for $175. I've been itching for some of these things anyways, if they are in decent condition, is this a good deal? I looked on gunbroker, and the cheapest price on the rifle alone was $560.

Whoops, I meant to put this in the general firearms discussion...

Be careful... there are a lot of replicas out there. There are also weapons that are not sound or safe. If it is to cheap to be true... like they say, it usually is. If you are not experienced with these weapons then take someone who is. Good Luck!!!

If they are in working condition, and the barrels arenot rusted on the inside, I would say go for it. Black powder has to be cleaned after firing to keep them from rusting, unless you are using powder pellets.

I know next to nothing about black powder weapons, and I don't know anybody who does either. How would I be able to tell if they are the real deal?

I know that there are a lot of wall hanger type black powder rifles out there that may have never been up to snuff for shooting. Some may have been shootable in the past, but rust, age and indescrimanate parts swapping has rendered then unsafe. Considering the price of art work these days, even if they are not good enough to shoot, but you like looking at them, they are worth the money. Just because the guy says they are firearms, does not make them safe to shoot. Make the deal with a grain of salt or take someone versed in very ole arms with you for advice.
