In the head, up close. . .

That said, seriously, get a weapon with more "bang". .223 is a very popular choice.

Unless you are *sure* of the shot, do not shoot at coyotes with a .22LR!

i killed one with a 10-22 some years back. shot it in the ear from 50ish yds. i wouldn't take a 22 on a planned coyote hunt, but i was squirl hunting and happened on one

My dad hit one in the gut with bow years ago and it ran in a fallen tree so he blocked the end, came home to get the .22 lr went back and shot it in the head at about 20 ft.

It can be done. A deer can be killed with a .22lr with correct shot placement. (.22lr with a scope, crosshairs right behind the eye @ 50yrds. or less)

I've done it many many times just fine.

The issue with range is less a matter of the bullet penetration than it is one of shot placement. If you can make a solid head shot from whatever range, under whatever the conditions are, you can kill one. Each situation is different...standing still...moving...clear line of sight....etc. You can't depend on a body shot as you can with something that hits harder.

a 22 mag will extent your range some i dont know much about the .17 guns. but just about anything small and centerfire would be a good chose

A old timer in Argos uses a .17 and loves it. He does the head shot with the .17 also. He will tell you it works better then the .22. But you want to know your rifle and how well you can use it so you can get a good clean kill.

i dont think i will be using a .22... the woods i hunt in are pretty thick so im gonna try and stick with my mossberg 12 gauge...longest shot in these woulds would be 75 yards max..

If I can't get my 30-06 back from my cousin today I'm going to borrow a friends 223 to do some yote hunting. I don't feel confident in my M44 at the ranges we are likely going to be baiting them. If I were going to be close range in a woods, I'd be ok with the .22 but gotta be precise on shot placement.

Everyone I know either uses the .22MWR, or .223. Magnum rounds are a lot hotter, and I have seen them go up to 50 grain in the Federal gameshok.
