    Hi Folks,

I looking for your opinion on which 4 knots you think are the most important to know. I have an idea in my head that I should know how to tie a slip knot, tie two ropes together, a non-slip knot and ? I am not looking for anything complicated something easy to untie and it would be nice if they worked for multiple diameter ropes (1/2" to paracord).

I do know how to tie the Bowline.

    Thanks for your help

"Knot time" is the only app on my phone that never gets deleted. As long as I have my phone, I can make any knot I need.

near Bedford on a whole lot of land.
I teach to my SAR classes the Figure 8 family, Bowline, overhand and overhand bend (double), water knot (webbing), butterfly, and prusik. Several of those aren't "knots," but only a nerd knows the difference.

I also teach the trucker's hitch which EVERYONE should know.

I would add taughtline hitch to those mentioned above.
Edit: Not for joining rope, but just a knot that everyone should know.

Well, all the ones I wanted to throw out, are out.
But I can add that most of those knots have variations. So if you learn the basic knot, you can learn 1 or 2 variations.

And I'm fairly certain you can use the internet to learn to tie a dragon bowline.

Bowline, sheet bend, and fishing knot are the ones that I use the most. But I remember growing up my dad always saying "If you don't know how to tie a knot, tie a lot!"

Hitch, box, slip, and one fancy knot of your choice. If the general public who only knows how to tie a granny knot and a bow can get by with essentially no knot knowledge whatsoever, a few basics will get you along in life with flying colors.

I like the button knot and monkey fist as my 'fun' knots.

    I don't do/need a lot that needs tying...

But the most often knot I do use is the taughtline.

And square knot - but that's so ubiquitous that it's hardly worth mentioning.

Something else to consider learning: lashing.

Check out the local fire department to learn about knots. One of the basic classes to take. Had an instructor from the Munster FD who did macreme .

Only 4 huh? At least add a fifth. I would say with Obama-care coming a hangman's noose may be helpful and allow you a civilized death.

Not counting fishing it would be hard to imagine life without bowline, taught line and clove hitch.

What knot did David Carradine use in Bangkok? That's the way I want to go -- doing something so freaky that the newspapers feel the need to omit some details and people who hear about it say, "Whoa, that cat was a FREAK!"
