Three Lafayette police officers were honored for saving the lives of two teenagers caught in a deep ravine in a wooded area in Lafayette, Indiana during a July rain storm.
The teens sought shelter in a storm drain and ended up being trapped there. Officer Charles Williams risked his own life by plunging into the storm drain to rescue them after the teens were trapped inside for hours. All were eventually pulled out by Lafayette police and firefighters.
Officer Williams received the "gold merit" award, the highest honor the Lafayette Civil Service Commission can award.
