Laptop advice-- running Windows from external hard drive instead of internal?

I am fairly computer literate, and I was not able to figure out all the stuff to download and the images to verify and whatever else I needed to do. Could very well have been the three hours of sleep last night and the canine from hell barking all day. I'll look at it again tomorrow.
