California has an initiative to legalise marijuana on their November ballot and a group of current and former law enforcers are getting behind it. Their rationale is simple. Legalise it and cops will have more time to go after real criminals, instead of the 60K pot smokers they arrest each year. Of course, many political cops are against it for all the wrong reasons. They stand to lose money and power.

Legalizing pot would free up police to fight violent crime, law enforcement group says [Updated] | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times

Just the simple fact that CA is trying to legalize it alone should enough that the rest of the states shouldn't.

If certain dept. feel marijuana arrest are a waste of time then why not use officer discretion and stop arresting for some marijuana related crimes?

Why not just have an ICE like directive and choose not to enforce any mj laws?

All the politicians can think of is the tax money that would come from it.

No one gets arrested for small amounts of pot anymore.

Gotta look and see who the man is behind the curtain.

    Really?

Can you e-mail this fact to the West Lafayette and Purdue Police Department for me?:D

Actually that's probably an instance where these arrests are the worst. Getting caught with any drug cuts off your financial aid, which sucks way worse than the fine.

I can get Jeff Cooper (from beyond the grave) to do it.

Onto the topic: IndyMonkey is right: The people at the top are making the decision on this, trickle down authority.

The officer's discretion is everything with this. Alot I have talked to enforce based on their views on it, but one thing is clear: Its "illegal" because the law says it is. Punishment varied in their opinion from taking it from the user to trying anything to pin a real crime on the user (dealing, etc...).

"We don't like your kind around here, so we'll find anything to bust you on, even though we wouldn't bust someone else for it."

    Naaaah, that never happens.

*never done any, no desire to. Might try it if it were legal, but don't really care one way or another.

I understand where Indy is coming from. Make it legal = we can tax it.

just like they tax liquor and cigs, etc.

they tax everything. its worse than the brittish in the 1700's up in this place. they force us to pay taxes on OUR land that WE suposedly own, because of FORCED services they say they provide us.

More power to california!! they may have it wrong on MANY other issues, but on this one they have it right. so what if its about the tax dollars for them?? its a recreational thing and california needs anything it can right now to get out of the red!! it still doesnt mean the feds wont overstep their bounds and arrest people. just like they have for the STATE LEGAL "medical marijuanna" stores.

im getting to the point where im for about anything that puts the govt back in its place. i cant believe we have let them get this big over us. the govt is the whole reason people are against pot anyways. its not a bad drug.
