AK's come in several different calibers. 5.45x39mm, 7.62x39mm, and 5.56x45mm are the most common cartridges they are chambered for. The only AK I would avoid is the older style Romanian WASR's. I would buy a Yugo AK. I think they are running for around $600. If you buy a used one just check to make sure that corrosive ammo was not shot through it and then not properly cleaned later.

Love my Yugos! WASRs aren't always bad, just try and make sure you can play with it first. mag wobble and canted front sight are good things to check out. Mine has more wobble than any others I own (not awful), but still shoots 100%
Not to derail, but who makes that fore end Uzi button? That looks freaking great!

I like that Krebs, but don't think I can afford the 1800 dollar price tag right now. i am looking for the 7.62x39 and 600 sounds a lot better.

Well best for the money means Rifle Dynamics, or Krebs. Best for the money you have means, pretty much a crap shoot? As was stated, not all WASRs are bad, but if you aren't familiar with the platform, you're gonna end up in trouble most likely with the stuff that has been put out lately.

I have had a WASR from back when they were sub 400 range. Between family, friends and I more than 1,000 rounds sent down range, many rapid fire, without so much as a hiccup. I would not pay 600-700 for one like people are asking now. 400 ish it is a really good rifle for the money. I would love to have another once prices settle back down, which IMO they are starting to.

Just keep on the trail of a C39, you'll eventually find one somewhere.

There's also one coming soon with a chrome lined barrel, not sure if that'll change the price much but I'd be hot for that one myself.

I just wish they had a side optics rail.

I had a WASR a few years back that was nothing but problems. I bought another one last month, so far 400 rounds without so much as a hiccup. I'd go with a Yugo as the best bang for your buck, or a Waffenwerks, if you go the 5.45 route. If you can find them in stock anywhere, the Arsenals are a big step above WASRs, Yugos, or WWs. They can generally be had for around 900-1100.
