I'm curious, do you guys buy wood by the linear foot or lineal foot?

is this just a recent fad to use "lineal" or is there some actual grammar reason behind the use?

Lineal vs. Linear Feet. When measuring length, use the word “linear,” instead of “lineal.” Lineal means belonging to or being in direct line of descent from an ancestor.

    lin·e·al
    ˈlinēəl
    adjective
    1.
in a direct line of descent or ancestry.
    "a lineal descendant"
    2.
relating to or consisting of lines; linear.

Not as concise as linear, but seems acceptable. Better than using loose for lose! :)

Actually the proper way to buy lumber is in board feet.

Once apon a time you could bid an entire project just by knowing the board foot price was .15 cents.

    • 10' 1x12 =1.50
    • 16' 2x4 = 1.60
    • 8' 2x10 = 2.00

being that I work in a lumber yard we buy it by the board foot, as that is how wholesalers sell it. Our lumber is priced by its dimensions ie 2x4x8 we do not sell by the foot but by the piece, A 2x4x8 will actually measure 1.5 x 3.5 then the length which will usually be about .5 inches longer than the specified length. If you are purchasing a 2x4 precut stud the length will be an exact measurement, ie an 8 foot precut stud will measure 94&5/8 inches.

Actually it is before it is sawn. "Real 2x4s" weren't 2"x4" they were less by the width of the kerf. You are paying for the sawdust from the kerf and the shavings from planeing it smooth and routing the edge.

Brlieve me, working with surfaced lumber is lightyears ahead of working with rough sawn.

so it is “mill- lineal” issue then that must be the issue.

So did you catch up during the sermon?

    no, surprisingly.

I did take a nap, scheduled from 4-6pm. I told the kids not to go into the basement and to let me sleep. At 5:30p my son sneaks in, grabs my phone to do the "find my iphone" thing to find his phone :xmad:

He only did it so he didn't get in trouble for leaving his phone outside and he couldn't find it. I explained breaking one rule so you don't get in trouble for something else is not how we do things
