Hello: I am looking to embark in a new hobby of long distance target shooting. By Long distance I mean 500-800 yards and I am interested in using 7 MM Mag Cartridge. My budget for rifle and scope is $1000.00 So far I am looking into the Savage and Remington rifles. I will be honor to receive comments from member of this Forum.
Thanks in advance for your time and comments,

Are you completely committed to the 7mm? I believe the .308 would serve you much better for accuracy at that distance. A whole lot of options are avaliable in that round, and the .308 will be more accurate.

The 7mm Mag will certainly do the job for you and chambered in a Savage with Accu-trigger will get you to 800 yards easily. A State Long Range champion has used the 7mm Mag to win the Championship.

I won't be much help with picking a scope. I have seen Tasco scopes do just as well in competition as more expensive scopes.

I have a Ruger M77 all weather with after market muzzle break and trigger job...I have a 3x15 leupold munted on it in 300 win mag....I have shot it out to 500 yards and picked it over the 308 after some personal reasearch on ballistic perfomance over long range....I can shoot 1" moa with factory rounds at 300 yrds.....It is my perosnal favorite rifle....I invested about $900 in the whole rig 7 or 8 years ago.:twocents:

I own a Remington 700 ADL with synthetic stock and a bushnell 4x12x40 scope. Handloading for it will get you the best accuracy. I have printed a 3 shot group with all three touching at 100 yards. The 7MM should be plenty accurate to shoot as far as you want to.

    Smokenfire10:

Thanks for your suggestion. Yes, a 308 is one of the caliber I have been looking into it, I used some of this rifle caliber in the U.S. Army. I was thinking about 7MM Mag in case I want to explore a longer distance with a heavier bullet.

    Thanks again and Happy Holidays.

i think there are better calibers than the 7mm for your goal, but i also think there are alot worse. there is nothing wrong with the 7mm what so ever and its mainly just preference.

my first question is do you reload? for me reloading is a nessessity for long range shooting not a option. and trust me if you dable in lr shooting you will be glad you started reloading because you will soon want to go further and further. if not this is what i would do.

buy a starters kit for reloading plus 7mm dies-bullets-powder and primers. the 800 yds shot will be difficult with factory ammo. hypothetically

    lee classic kit-120ish
    50 rem brass-30 bucks
    vld bullets-30 bucks
    100 primers-4 bucks
    powder -30ish
    dies-30ish

total 254 all these prices are off the top of my head so could be plus or minus.

then buy a savage accutrigger model =400ish

    supersniper scope 10x-16x-20x =325ish

    254+400+325+=979

i was close and you still need a base. i believe the ss comes with good rings

if you already reload or have no desire to

    savage accutrigger 400ish
    nikon monarch 650ish

    still close

Hello 42769vette :I am most grateful for your advise. Yes, I do reload with my Dillon equipments. so more than likely I will be doing some rifle reloads. I am curious to read about your opinion regarding better calibers. Have Great Holidays.

6.5x284 would be a better choice since you reload

i have a 260 remington that shoots better than most can at 800 yards

personally i would go with a 6.5 or 30 cal efore i went with 7 mm

Thaks for the e-mail. I was looking at 6.5 early this year. I will like to read your opinion why you think 6.5 is your choice of preference. I know it was for me in the military vc. m-15 rounds. It does hits better.

Thanks and have a great day.

i would steer clear of the 6.5x284 for target shooting due to the horible barrel life. as far as better calibers the 260 would be top of my list. it has good barrel life and you can still take advantage of the great bc 6.5 bullets.

You will definatly want to reload for the 7MM. I was only getting about 1.5" to 2" accuracy with factory ammo. I have not tried any of the premium ammo as cost is prohibitive for target shooting. Personal preference for handloading is the Berger 168 grain VLD bullets, RL22 powder. The BC on these bullets is off the chart compared to other manufacturers. Shoot close to one hole accurate when loaded long(.001-.002 off lands).
