Louisiana residents will not be able to fly ANYWHERE after January 15 without a passport. This comes from the Federal REAL ID Act that dictates that states must have "enhanced" driver's licenses.

We've got the terrorists running scared now.

Real ID Act deadline approaching, passports may be required to travel anywhere for LA residents
Come January all Louisiana residents could be required to have a passport when boarding a plane, no matter the destination. It all has to do with a federal law, called the Real ID Act. It was signed into law back in 2005 in the wake of the September 11th terror attacks. It requires states to have enhanced driver's licenses and state ID's to boost security at airports. Louisiana has been able to get around the law since 2005, but that might be coming to an end.

There's now a new deadline for states to comply, and it's coming up very soon on January 15th. Louisiana is one of a handful of states, which currently does not meet the requirements of the Real ID Act. The state's been able to get around it thanks to a law signed in 2008 by Governor Bobby Jindal. But now, the state may be forced to comply with the new deadline. As it stands right now, come January 15th, Louisiana residents would be required to have a passport, should they want to fly, even for domestic travel.

    What planet are you from?

This particular example may only be taking place in America, but the level of control is no where near limited to the USA.

What I mean by that is this: The Federal government just keeps inching it's way to a federal ID. I fully expect this to happen within the next 10 years. While it would be near impossible to have checkpoints at every state crossing, I fully expect a TSA type of organization to step up begin random 'security checkpoints' anywhere they see fit. 'Show me your papers' is not that far of a stretch.

So, those people use alternate transportation till the airlines scream enough. Or till the feds close another perceived "loophole".

If we had one or two days where a significant percentage of airline passengers requested pat-downs instead of scanners, the whole system would grind to a halt. That and fly less.
