Could this been a "fishing expedition" about creating a pretext to stop you and interact with you so he could check up on you?

Nah, I doubt it. He had me cold and chose not to give me a ticket, for whatever reason. The police around here are pretty hard on the students, but are kind of lenient on the older folks.

Congrats on the bike and the close call. I've had those "how did I not get a ticket" encounters too. It pays to be nice to the officers I've found.

    No doubt.
Just a few months ago, I got pulled over as I got to the bottom of the off ramp from I-70 to IN-3 right at late dusk.
The deputy who got out strolled up and politely told me that I hadn't turned on my headlights.
Rather than having a cow and braying about "muh ryeeeeeets," I just (genuinely embarrassed at my mistake) flipped my lights on right away.
I thanked him and he gave me a thumbs up and got right back in his car.
Grand total delay of about 30 seconds and I was on my way again...no ticket, not even a warning, just a reminder to do what's best for me and other drivers.
    Imagine that.
