What is the best way to clean a magazine? I have 5 M1 carbine magazines that are really dirty that need cleaning. What should i use to clean them with?

I just take them apart carefully, spray them down with Break-Free and send an old pieces of t-shirt thru them using a piece of dowel rod.

In the past, when I had several mags that were heavily greased and encrusted with crud, I boiled them for a short peiod until clean then disassembled them and cleaned normally.

A lot of things are a decent solvent and odds are you already have something that will work.
    WD-40.
    Any penetrating oil.
    Seafoam.
    Kerosene.
    Lamp oil.
    Diesel fuel.
    Paint thinner.
The hot, soapy water that was mentioned earlier.

Anytime I go to Lowes, Rural King ect I look for any kind of a brush that I can use for magazines and various other firearms cleaning chores.

Any oil product that is left on metal surfaces will attract gun power residue and cause a build up.

I prefer using Simple Green to clean magazines with. If mixed properly it cuts through most any crud.

I took mine apart and washed everything with hot water and soap and wiped everything down with an old shirt. For the magazine Body(idk what you'll call it) I used a push rod that came with a cleaning kit I bought to push the shirt through it. It worked out pretty well.
