I've used one at Halloween (without a chain) for a good scare.
I wouldn't think it's a deadly weapon without the chain!?

What? Like an unloaded gun? Revving a chainsaw without a chain seems to me a lot like racking the action of an unloaded 12 gauge; don't expect anyone to think you're not a danger to them.

After having discussed this matter with someone who owns a business across the street from where things started, know that 1) This was the culmination of an entire day's events, 2) This is no where near the first time CPD had visited this person that day, let alone in general, and 3) Mental health *may have* played into this situation.

FWIW, about five years ago, I was went into a gas station and came out, there was a group of about a half dozen redneck n'er do-wells standing around outside.
I walked right past them going in and coming out without saying anything or even glancing at them, but when I was almost to my truck, one of them fired up a chainsaw and revved it once, getting the rest of the hicks to laugh loudly.
I called the main office of the gas station and told them about the hoods, and they took immediate action.

Would I know the station? Perhaps a Pak-a-Sak?

It was the Gas America (now Speedway) on US 40 in Greenfield.
