No, they are not. There is a new MOS, "Reconnaissance Sniper." Snipers will now be attached to recon platoons.

    LINK:

Did you miss where they are no longer going through sniper school? Now they are simply going through 2 week marksmanship training. That is nowhere near the same thing.

    That was 2021.

    From the article I posted
All three training locations for the grueling 3-month Scout Sniper course at Camp Pendleton, California; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; and Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, will stop admitting new students starting in fiscal 2024, according to the message.

They're not eliminating snipers per se, just the "Scout Sniper" MOS.
    Yes they are.
No, they are not. Why is this so hard to understand? There will no longer be Scout Snipers. There will still be snipers in the USMC, in Recon battalions and MARSOC units.

"A spokesman for the Marine Corps confirmed that the scout sniper platoons would be eliminated, but said that the underlying skill set would be integrated elsewhere in the service.

"Precision rifle capability will remain within the infantry company, and the Marine Corps will continue to maintain school-trained snipers within Marine Reconnaissance and Marine Special Operations units," said service spokesman Capt. Ryan Bruce."

Throughout our history, people have decided that they are 'outdated'.
Then they find out, they're not.
    Carlos Hathcock witnessed it himself.
And they said it even in Iraq. And then they needed them.

Sure. The existing snipers will still exist. No new ones will be trained. I'm not sure why you have such a hard time understanding that no sniper schools means no new snipers. Calling a cat a dog, doesn't make it a dog.

I'm not sure that you can actually read, because it's been mentioned in other articles posted...a new 9-week sniper course for the new secondary MOS Reconnassaince Sniper (0322) job has been created. The new sniper course is shorter than the original Scout Sniper 13-week course because the students are already Reconnassaince Marines and do not need the additional recon training that would have been given to Scout Snipers, who are attached to the infantry and not recon.

USMC Infantry will still retain designated marksmen, a tier lower than sniper, but beyond standard rifleman, in their newly organized Scout platoons. Actual trained snipers, who have completed the new sniper course, will be attached to Recon and MARSOC.

What do you not understand about this? They are still training snipers. Just not Scout snipers.

General Berger (CMC) is destroying our Marine Corps! He is, unilaterally, changing the traditional mission of the Marine Corps. He has embraced and is force feeding equality to the detriment of force readiness. He, for all intents and purposes, is redefining the amphibious capability and unified air-ground format that have been the backbones of the Corps' contribution to the Nation's military readiness. His Force Structure Program has as a focus making the Corps into a littoral (brown water) extension of the Army. The sniper realignment and downgrading is but a tip of the iceberg. I foresee the Corps being absorbed (mission aligned) as a functionary of the Army. I pray that that will never happen, but....
I’m not former military but I am a student of military history. And it’s obvious the good General has not remembered his history lessons and without remembering his military history he will be doomed to make some egregious tactical errors. As a result, our enemies will heed the advice of Napolean (even though he met his Waterloo): Never interrupt your adversary when they are making a mistake. God save the Corps. :ingo:

Ben, The USMC will be just fine, they have been doing this for awhile now.

The Corps have been discussing this for a dozen years now. This is why things like the tankers are gone from the MC.
They have been beefing up the orient like the bases in Japan and Okinawa for a few years now.

The Marine Corps is getting back to its amphibious roots, lightening its load, and reclaiming its role as the nation's premier expeditionary force.

WTF is the Marine Corps doing , they dropped the M1A1 Abrams and now Scout Snipers too, this is foolish IMHO. Especially with the urban combat we have been seeing the last 20+ years , snipers are effective
