I would rather be told that if I left my home and got in a jam in the cold weather that I was on my own than be told that I could not go out. I would rather be told that if my home was destroyed by a flood or tornado and it was unsafe to enter that I was on my own than to be told that I could not salvage what was left. I would rather use my own judgement to determine my own destiny than to have someone with no investment determine it for me.

This happened after the explosion on the south side. Some houses were deemed unsafe and the owners could not retrieve any belongings. If I recall... It left many in a lurch.

The only issue I have with that approach, Dan, is that if you ran into trouble, you might use community resources that would have been available for other critical needs. If you run off the icy road into a ditch, perhaps that emergency vehicle was unable to transport someone to a hospital, etc.

Sometimes, we ought to think of the interests of the community rather than our own selfish needs. If you absolutely need to be out and about, that's fine. If you don't and you get in trouble….then it's on you, bro.

I think it is vital to the success of the human race to allow people to go out in times like this. Thin the herd a bit... do us a favor and play in traffic, make grave mistakes. Survival of the fittest.

So you know darwin says it is survival of the quickest to adapt to there enviroment not the smartest or fittest. Unless they are the ones who adapt quicker LOL

I knew there would be an english teacher lurking on her....... I just knew it!!!

Fair enough given that I once did more than lurk on an English teacher...

While we're at it, what's with the recent spate of people using "sale" when they mean "sell?"

Marshal law is what happens when the chief LEO of the town makes up the rules. Marshall law is that which was made up to support the rebuilding of Europe after WWII. Martial Law is a legal declaration of the suspension of the normal rights of the citizenry for the duration of an emergency. Good luck with either.

Emergency responders get paid to respond. Their choice of profession. Now they say you can't do anything that may cause them to have to respond?

Damn, I was a soldier for 28 years. My choice of profession. I didn't get to dictate they not to send me to war...

I am not worried about using up resources. They can't help every one at every moment. (That's why I carry) If I need a cop at my house, I call the cops. They ask what's the emergency. If I tell them a crime is happening and I am a victim, unless they're all busy, they send someone. Same thing If I get stuck on the road. I call 911, they ask what's up, I say I'm stuck in a ditch... They should say if you didn't know how to handle a vehicle, you shouldn't be driving, and tell me I'm on my own until they can spare someone. And when they CAN spare someone, they should send them. If I make a choice, I live with (or die from) the consequences. Emergency responders made a choice to respond... get off your but and respond if you can. Hey if the weather is so bad you can't... then I guess it sucks to be me.

What happen to freedom? Bad weather kills people. LOTS of things kill people. Help out if you can. Every one knows you can't save them all... so let them live (or die) free.

    Hello everyone, I'm back.
Just got home from work after a 33 hour shift.
I'll try to better on my typing. Tired and a tablet were not working out together.
I'm still making mistakes, but easier to see and correct.

    Trip back home.
Some emergency, I ran my cell phone as a recorder so I could keep up. I thought I could just count in my head, but the streets were busy. So much for the emergency. This was down Broadway.

    Anyway.
in 8 miles, 18-20 minute trip. 11:15 PM to just after 11:30 PM.
75 cars on the road. This is cars on the road, pulling on or off. Doesn't include people in parking lots at open businesses.

Of those 75, 1 was a police, 1 was a tow truck with car, and 1 was a pickup truck with snow blower.

    16 businesses open.
I wasn't recording at first, so I can't remember a couple. But of the 16, there were
    7 gas stations.

Ok folks run away the Polar Vortex is here. Heck its winter. Winter is cold and it brings snow. Our elected officals are becoing more pompous then usual as time goes by. If you have a vehicle that can travel in the snow and you have to go out then do so. What are the cops going to do. Pull you over in your 4wd truck as they chase you in their crown vic. I doubt it.

But you are not "on your own" as long as you are on public roads. You are potentially endangering the safety of others.

    I agree with this.^

I can't begin to count the wrecks I saw and the stranded motorist that need rescued because they thought they would be fine. And then it go to the point where no wrecker's in our area were running so all the vehicle's had to be abandoned and left to cause more issues for other vehicles that came along.

    Here's an example.

Im posting this in here because of the recent state of Emergency that has been issued in IN. There is another discussion about this with regard to a ticket i got but under this thread i wanted peoples opinions on the present situtation. North West IN has declared a state of emergency because of the snow and temp. No one is allowed to drive according to the local government unless you are a emergency [STRIKE]personal[/STRIKE] personnel (FIFY). Is this justifiable and ok with you. Since when are they allowed to tell you that you can not go to work and not allowed to leave your home. The roads where not that bad that i drove on the temp was cold. Would you call this a state of emergency?

    Furthermore,
I will not obey any law dictated by a character from "How I Met Your Mother".

so u actually got a ticket?....i just figured it was a bluff, and this "marshall law" was more like "no cops are out right now so we'll threaten everyone so they stay home and we dont have to police anything cuz its stoopid ridiculously cold outside"

I would argue for a declaration of 'you're on your own' rather than a stay put order. This would require modifying the law such that if you decide to take your own chances under such conditions, no action against emergency personnel or their sponsoring unit of government is allowed during that time.

This makes sense. I see the reasoning behind the driving ban as so many are not capable/equipped or have any real reason to be out. We all knew this was coming, be ready for it.
We pulled 4 nieghbors off the snowplow hump at the end of the driveways yesterday. To stupid to dig that out. They all said it was the city's responsibility....we just shrugged and left them go. 1 older lady did not make it around the block. She nosed into a drift. Zero snow skills. We pulled here out, got the car home and son drove her to the drugstore......she needed Pepsi's.......:dunno:

    ......she needed Pepsi's.......:dunno:

I think that's a big part of the problem right there. In general, a lot of people don't know the difference between "wants" and "needs". If travel is so dangerous, Pepsi is not a "need". However, I know it's not a black and white issue. Saturday (before the travel ban but when roads were still plenty bad) I went out to get gas and oil for my snowblower. Did I "need" gas and oil if I had a shovel? It all becomes very gray, I admit. But Pepsi?
