    Thoughts:

Excellent group of shooters yesterday. They were all repeat students, the vast majority of them having trained with multiple schools and quite a diverse group of backgrounds and employment. We got through a lot of material and the class flowed very well.

Guns on the line were Glocks, M&P's, HK, and two 1911's. All ran great. The 1911's were both owned by experienced shooters who have a lot of time on them and a lot of rounds down range. A Les Baer with all sorts of finish wear and a holster that looks like a 30 year old baseball glove warms my heart. The other was a S&W that has been through many classes and competitions.

One of the instructors owns an XD9SC that he brought out for some demonstrations. More on that later.

This is why XD's, 1911's, and exposed hammer guns suck for contact shooting:

That is as classic as they come. Tinman - brother, good luck living this one down.

Oh yeah, the class was great too. Repost from another forum:

Definitely wasn't a "sunny and 70" kind of day, so we got some training time while in winter carry mode. This presents a few additional complications, such as fighting through multiple cover garments, shooting with gloves on, etc. It's a great opportunity for students to evaluate how and where they carry when the temps drop.

The class is exactly what the title says, close contact SHOOTING. Not grappling, not exchanging blows, but how to put rounds into your problem and make distance. No one there was a beginner, so we ramped up the training speed very quickly. 3D targets are always cool, you have to think about shot placement when moving laterally. Plus, they are fun to dress up like your local gangbanger.

On the issue of keeping the gun in battery - fighting an irregularly shaped human, with clothes to snag on, and hands reaching for your gun, it's a very real possibility for any gun to come out of battery, even with a substantial stand off or barrel protrusion. Some guns, i.e. the Glock and M&P, offer a one handed option to mitigate the problem. Murphy will be there too, so it is something to at least acknowledge, and not assume your fight will go as planned in your head.

Ah yes, and jealousy rears it’s ugly head….. If you guys work real hard, someday you might look this good too. Besides, you can't even see my nose in that pic :):

Hey at least my kids look like their mother. ;)

Good class, we’ll have to do it again sometime, without the rain, freezing temps, and mud. Range time is always good, range time where you get to work some relevant, less practiced skill sets under professional supervision is a big time bonus. As Aaron said, the experience level was pretty high, so the class progressed quickly. Steve provided a lot of solid information and technique with good supporting information. Most of the stuff I had experience with, but he did have a few new takes on different subjects based on his background and experience. That’s why it is so important that you diversify your training.

Close contact is an area so few people understand, and fewer want to train in that there are very few opportunities for this type of training. I would recommend that anyone interested in defensive shooting abilities get into a class like this at some point.
