I have access to a machine shop and was wondering if anyone knew if it was legal to shorten a barrel to 18.5in. I know its illegal to cut it shorter than that but I don't know if its legal to cut it down at all.

I'm sorry is this a stupid question? I just don't want to do anything illegal because I plan on taking this gun out and about fairly often.

No question is a stupid question if you are not sure of the answer already.

With the asinine gun laws that are around you can never be too careful.

I just cut one today! I cut it at 19 inches. 18 is legal, but who is going to miss the extra inch?! Its not the size of the boat its the motion in the ocean...

As stated, cutting it to 18.5 inches is legal, but only if the final overall length is greater than 26 inches. Don't forget overall length when cutting the barrel.

You can increase stock length if needed by a permanently mounted recoil pad.

Wow thank you I had not even considered if there was a limit on over all length

18 in barrel and 26 overall is the Federal Reg. Indiana cannot go shorter even with a stamp. However, I believe other states allow SBS, Short Barrel Shotguns.

Are you sure? I was at a gun show 1500, and was looking at a shorty
Shotgun it was told I just had to get the Indiana AOW stamp( any other weapon)
It was fair cheap the stamp but the wAit was long. I friend claims he had one, but I do t known for a fact. That's why I ask with question.

    Can anyone clarify ???

AOWs are not SBS. That's how we can have OAW "shotguns" in IN.

    They are indeed different animals.

Yes, you can modify it. Not a problem. :yesway:

DO NOT GO UNDER 18" FROM THE CLOSED BREACH FACE.

SEE how easy it is to run afoul of these asinine laws!

I failed to mention the overall length portion of the stupidity that is the law regarding shotguns.

Always get more than one opinion!

It would be very difficult to go under the legal OAL with a legal barrel on most shotguns.

My 870 fits the OAL requirements with just the receiver and barrel.
