I spent years being a volunteer FF, and saw more ammo detonate than you can shake a stick at, and it was never really dangerous. No pressure to force the bullet or shot anywhere. Now 20 pounds of black powder stored in a basement, or a refrigerator of old dynamite were completely different stories.

MythBusters did an episode on ammo. The statements made on the news and radio are false. The lead stays put and the casings go flying. HARMLESS.

If the Indianapolis FD did "back off" due to the ammo, they need to be educated and Re-trained. I sure am glad they are not "protecting" my house. I was a volunteer FF about 50 years ago. I worried a lot more about a gal of gasoline than all the ammo or gun powder. (except black powder in quantity). Now loaded guns are dangerous in a fire, if cooked off the bullet comes out just as if you pulled the trigger.

Ammo will not even penetrate dry wall when it blows. As long as you have fire fighters gear with a face mask to protect your eyes, you are more then safe. Someone should repost that video...
