Find most of mine down here around rotting cherry stumps and logs. At my place in Michigan, under the pines and some by rotting poplers.

i have only had luck under dead ones....you find any around live ones?
No live, only dead. My favorite kind of tree in the spring is a dead elm. First year dead is usually best sometimes the 2nd is best, they'll usually push for at least 3 years.

I had a big American elm in Jackson Co that didn't push until the 5 th year. Gotta check and check and check again .
