How can the idiot be driving such a beautiful car in this crazy snow/salt environment!

I worked with a fellow in Dearborn who would (what is now called resto-mod) "restore" a car every three years. Modern brakes and powertrain - everything else pretty much as built, with the exception of modern finishes and sound dampening.

He'd drive them practically every day, only kept it home if the snow was too deep(and he had a 66 Bronco for those times).

His rationale - he could spent 30K on a modern vehicle that would depreciate and would likely never be worth anything down the road - or could drop 20k in something that he could enjoy and when he tired of it, sell it for what he paid for it or perhaps even more depending on the market.

He did everything himself, and was damn good at it.

In particular, I remember a 68 Cyclone Cale Yarborough Special, a 65 Comet Caliente and a 66 Fairlane GTA Convertible.

Lots of folks called him an idiot - but he ALWAYS made money, and nearly once a week there would be someone trying to buy the car from him in the parking lot.

He was one of those few folks that didn't get emotionally attached to vehicles - said he would own all the things he wanted as a kid, and I'm sure he's well on his way.

Love it when I can bring back an old thread to life.

So today I took that lovely car out for a spin. Did the usual 2 mile drive (storage location to dad's house to gas station and back) with it just to turn it on, make sure it still runs, ensure the tires stay OK, etc.

Well at the gas station instead of turning to go back to the storage location I decided to get on Cline Ave going North. [See note 1 if you are not from NWI] Bill B I "almost" stopped at your house but alas the engine finally got hot enough and I literally missed your exit as I blinked and was well almost at the casinos! The raw power that car has is :naughty:. In my stupid early 20s I know I would have tested the limits of this machine but alas I'm much more tamed/lame now and while I know she got a nice work out and could go even faster I dared not.

When I got back to Cline and Ridge Rd (too quickly really and this car really needs a longer stretch of road to run it's wheels) I had some young kids in a newer camero making their engine make noise at the stop light. They took off like a bat out of hell when the light turned green. I just smiled cause I know there was no need to prove to them which car would really win. :D

I'm not a car guy but finally putting the car back to sleep I left with a smile cause it felt good being able to ride that machine and the raw power it has.

BTW it is still a chick magnet. Got some female stares while at the gas station and just cursing down the street with it. :D

    NOTE 1:
For those of you not from the region: Cline Ave is a strip of highway that connect US-80/94 to the Indiana Toll Road and then to the Steel Mills. It's basically a long highway that unless you are going to the steel mill or casino boat there is no other use for it now. Once you pass the 80/94 exit it's easy to go fast since there is no way for any speed patrols to hide. The highway is 2 lanes each way elevated and takes you past the heavy industry area of East Chicago, Hammond, and Gary.

Nice car, I'll keep an eye out for it! My neighbor has a 69(I think) Corvette. He took me out on Cline Ave. once. That was definitely fun!:rockwoot:
