My dad gave me a new mil-surp and ammo! (Sorry purists, she's sporterized!)

Well, My high standard .22 project, ( https://www.indianagunowners.com/fo...h-standard-model-b-restoration-posterity.html ), needs more tuning, but I showed it to my dad, and told him I intended to give it to him when it's done. What's the old man do? He one ups me again! Gives me this SMLE sporter and a couple hundred rounds of mil surp! ( https://www.indianagunowners.com/fo...mething-ive-never-physically-seen-my-day.html ) What can I say? My old man knows how to make my day!

Anyhow, I know very little about the SMLE, and this one has no definite maker's mark on the receiver, so any info you can gather from my pics and decipher for me, I'll be eternally grateful! One question I have, Is the barrel a cut down military barrel, or a replacement?

I would like to do a scout mount/scope, since this is a fast 18.5" rifle, but don't want to spend cash on parts that won't work! It came to me with the rail that's on it, and I had this 4X32 laying around that feels great on it, as a fast, light bush type rifle! Until I can afford a good scout setup, I imagine I'll be tickled with this setup!

OK, I'll shut up now! Here's your porn, ya pervs!

Now the barrel I was asking about.

And finally all the rollmarks that might help the pros ID what I have here! Again, any help is appreciated!

This one says 47, on the barrel.

Is this an arsenal engraving? Because they stripped the factory rollmarks? Appears to say, "6/47 AB", then a 4 digit serial#.

I know the purists are heaving right now, but in my mind, an old sporter has it's own little bit of history! Like getting Grandpa's Winchester 94! This is my second mil-surp sporter, and I think they are great! My other was an 03' Springfield, with 1/4 minute, click adjustable peeps, and a super slick bolt. I traded it poorly, and miss it madly, but hopefully this one will fill the void in my heart AND in my collection!

(Here's the 03' in case the purists still have some dinner in their bellies!)

Ok, I did the legwork, cause we must not have many SMLE guys here. She's a British made No5mk1 Jungle carbine. The electro-pencil engraved receiver IS original. Barrel is original and un-cut. I may or may not take her back to original, but I think I will definitely replace the magazine and floorplate with a proper 10 round magazine. (She's cut down to 5 rounds, as is.) Since the barrel is uncut, I think I'll put the original flash hider/front sight base back on it as well. May or may not delete the optic, and go back to the original 800 yard adjustable irons. I'd be all for original specs, but they had no idea about ergonomics in the 40's, did they!? Like a 2x4 bolted to a gun!

As far as the barrel goes, I am no expert, but there is a partial Birmingham proof marking next to the .303 2.222" marking. I always found the SMLE to be a rather comfortable rifle to shoot, even prefer the funny shaped grip area of the stock.

I've never shot a .303 before today. I've read that they kick like a mule. My dad said they kick like a mule. That said, I must have a tough shoulder, or a better shooting position, because I could shoot this thing all day, if I had the ammo for it!

They really don't make em' like they used to, because this rifle, as well as my former 03' Springfield are easily as smooth an action as my custom 700!

Back in the day it was standard to sporterize military guns. Most were cheap and plentiful. I would not feel bad about it. Especially since it has family ties. I think it would be awesome to see you un-sport it. It would be a awesome thread! And gun pervs or the best kind of pervs. Followed by car pervs :-D I know your both hehe. But so am I!

And you have a awesome dad!

I can see objection to sporterizing a WWII mil-surp today, as they aren't as plentiful or cheap as they were in the 50's, but I'm with ya! If it was sporterized 60 years ago, I think that it still holds some value as a piece of firearms history! I think that if I can afford parts, before my next project bug strikes, I just might un-sporterize her!

I have one of these that is almost a dead ringer to yours. I don't know much about it though. A few years ago, I had a scope mount installed. Works fine. It does kick like a mule! I'll get it out when I get the chance and snap some photos of it.

Yeah, It looks well done. I would not sport a mil gun either. Well maybe if it was rough. But that being said I would not past one up if it was a deal! I think you have a really cool gun Phil. Sporterized or not! It's neat.

I do have a mosin with a crappy barrel that isn't worth much. I have seen a thread that a guy turned one in to a 45-70. I have thought about that. I don't know though.

Picked up an M1917 a few yrs ago that had a crudely cut original stock on it, but un-cut good metal for 125$. picked up a stock for <100$ and a handguard (could only find a P14 HG...), and shes beautiful today! If it was me I'd try to make it old again, but thats just me! Im not one for cutting up rifles, but I totally agree with the "Old" sporterized rifles. Thats what everyone did with their "cheap" US milsurps, really just more of a continuation of its history. Regardless what you do with it, enjoy it! Nice looking rifle!
