The past week has been horrible. Sometime last weekend, Memorial Day Weekend, someone got a hold of my Debit Card Number. And racked up a bunch of charges totaling to $1000.

The charges were made online to sites for web hosting, and a bunch of personal dating sites. Match.com was one of them.

After a week, I finally got a new debit card. And most of my money has been returned.

It's been a crap week. With a lot of convincing my wife that never in my life have I visited Match.com.

HA! That's a little funny now that you've almost got it all back. That's a huge pain in the butt though :noway:

    I've had that happen, too!

You're lucky, generally, when a debit card is dinged, you lose the money.

From now on: Don't use your debit card for ANY online purchases.

That means I gotta get a credit card.

I paid one off already, and cancelled it.

I've been busting my butt to pay off the second, and I already have cut the card up.

I don't wanna do credit cards anymore :(

Do credit cards...just don't run up debt on them!

    My wife learned that lesson.

And I love the people who come into work and say they hate debit cards and won't carry them, except they pay with check.

Checks are essentially debit cards for most places now.

Remember: There is nothing inherently wrong about owning a CC.

One can use and abuse a debit card just like one can use and abuse a credit card.

It's all about the USE and not ABUSE.

You might also inquire of your debit card's issuer (Probably VISA, as it seems most of them are) and see if you can get 1-time use numbers to use for online purchases should you desire.

Seriously, though: Don't use debit cards for online purchases. That's just asking for trouble.

You know, you could set your bank up to be able to pay your credit card with online banking (assuming your bank has it, it is 2012 after all).

Then everytime you make a purchase on your credit card, pay that amount when you get home right away. Then you've used a credit card, and the amount has came out of your bank account already and the credit card is paid off already too.

    That's actually a good idea.

If I did that, I'd like to get a whole new credit card.
The one I've been trying to pay off is Bank Of America. :noway:

Boo, BoA. I've had the same thing happen with my debit card, and you don't have to use it online to get it nicked. Mine was compromised by data theft from a retail store's servers.

Weird thing was, they used it to tithe a huge sum at a church in the UK. Giving stolen money to God... If that's not the most backwards thing I've ever heard of... There has to be more to the story than meets the eye. Church money laundering or something?

That's an excellent idea. BoA has always screwed me in the past even before I knew how anti-2A they were.

Look around, some cards have some really good rewards programs too. I know Capital One has quite a few, some are free and others cost money. But depending on how much you use it the ones with yearly fees usually have a better return.
