My 'new' 1898 toy.......** Updated **

    Here is what I know...:yesway:

Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle Works, Fitchburg Mass. U.S.A.
    PAT'D APR 6 86 FEB 15 87 MAY 10 87 AUG 25 96 PAT'S Pending

Serial E2xxxx ( In 2 spots, under the handle and behind the cylinder)

Here is what I found out...

SECOND MODEL SAFETY AUTOMATIC HAMMER REVOLVER
    (Black Powder Cartridges)------------1896-1908:)

E letter code prefix to the serial number and four patent dates on the top of the barrel was manufactured in 1898. :draw:
It is a second model small frame 32 S&W caliber safety automatic hammer revolver.:yesway:

What I need to do, fix the trigger spring as I broke (or unhooked it) while giving her a much needed cleaning....

Was warned NOT to use smokeless powder. Can't seem to locate black powder cartridges, so I am tempted to ...

    What do you think?

    is that similar?

as far as rounds go all i could find are blanks :(

    Winchester Ammo 32BL2P 32 Smith & Wesson by Winchester 32 S&W, 0gr, Black Powder, (Per 50) / Ammunition - Dummy Cartridges/Blanks / Winchester Ammo 32BL2P

could you possible have them custom loaded? would it be worth it?

    Nice top break!!!

I have a H&R Top Break that looks just like that, but is .22LR. Not sure on my year of MFG, but it was my Father-in-law's Father's, so probably goes back to the 20's or 30's.

My trigger spring was broken too. The one from E-guns parts or some of the other places is sort of a one size fits all spring, so may require just a little trimming of the lenght. It is very easy to install. I think the originals were probably a bit brittle, and prone to fatigue over the years.

The nickel finish on mine is not near as nice as yours, so I'm thinking about finding someone to replate it. It is in the bottom right of this pic.

Sweet and long barrel also. I would not get it redone, as its not original anymore. Being an heirloom though....it would be what you want.

It seems that I can get some 32S&W (Shorts) that are about the same pressure as a black powder round.....I might give that a shot.....I have ot get some brass punchs to remove the pins and repair the trigger return spring also....

    Update:

It was the trigger spring, had to use an easy out to get teh screw out. Anyhow parts on order to repair soon.

Now I just have to figure what ammo to use,

was told 32 S&W ONLY, no longs, shorts etc. Must be black powder but that is out.....Still looking...

Oh its not fixed, I just fianlly was able to take it apart and confirm it was the trigger spring. I have to order a new one tommorrow....

I had to drill a screw and punch out some pins to get at the TS.

Update: Trigger spring fixed. I had to take a drimmel tool and 'shape' the piece I ordered, but it fits and works. Now, hopefully I get to test it tommorow.

Brought this up in a other thread and decided to take it out and look at it. Just like when I put it up, sprayed some RemOil on her and back she goes...

This was a fun project, as will be my new Mosin.

Thanks - I know it is not worth much $$, but the hours the wife and I spent fixing it makes it unsellable. It was a project we BOTH enjoyed. Now if I can get her into the Mosin.....
