    I too have been thinking along these lines and it is an uncompromising position on both sides when the reality is as you laid out.

    Correct; they're just as "reasonable" for not compromising on their perceived reality. The difference, though, is that the conservative perception of reality is much closer to the truth than the liberal one, as evidenced by the fact that, when conservative principles are acted upon, the people's lives are improved, and when liberal (socialist) principles are acted upon, people's lives are ended. This is why relativism is so silly. There comes a point where people's beliefs collide with reality and have a real, tangible impact on the world.
