No offense meant on the quote but we all know about experts…. Anyways I picked up a muzzle loader at auction and think it might be something pretty rare. I have opened many and currently own a few firearms that have sone age to them, so I kind of know what to look for on original vs repro, but with the possible rarity and coinciding value of those one, I want to be sure of what it is. Who would you guys recommend to have it checked out by to verify its originality? If it is real and really valuable, I’m thinking a place like Rock Island would be the best way to realize full value of it. Thanks for any tips or ideas in where ti look.

As far as what I’ve done so far is found it in flaydermans and tried to do internet searches but. I have come up with absolutely nothing online. I’m usually pretty good at finding things! Flaydermans says there were only 1020 made so I’m sure that leads to less information on them being out there.

After some more online research, I’m thinking it really is a repro. It was listed as such but it was such a small production thing, it seemed odd any manufacturer would make a repro of it. I’m wondering if someone didn’t just want a cool one off project so they modified an available rifle to this carbine version. If so, I’ll have a cool short .58 cal front stuffer to play with! If it is original, I’ll send it off to a good auction house and find something fun to spend the money on!

I’ll have a better idea once I get it in hand.

Here’s an original, an 1855 Springfield rifled carbine.
