I was helping my dad out today with some tree issues. He pulled out the chainsaw to cut a tree down and the chainsaw wouldn't do the job for whatever reason. He says it was a new chain, but I'm not too sure on that. So being the kinda guy I am, I pulled out the axe. I wound up cutting 2 trees down and starting on a third. When we got towards the end of it, I took a good swing and shattered the handle, I have since claimed the axe as my trophy and promised dad a new one. My question is what is a good axe for camping. If I could find one that has a long handled axe and a hatchet that would be great, however just the axe is needed. Any advice for a guy who doesn't know too much about axes?

I have a fiskers axe with a fiberglass handle that has been great for years...it is tough and easy to sharpen. I purchased it at Rural king for $28.

Also purchase a nice file to keep your axe sharp.

There is NOTHING worse than a dull axe. The convex 90* edge that comes on most axes turns into a round edge very quickly. Even brand new they don't chop very well.

It will be worth your time to grind a nice sharp concave edge onto your chopper before using it.

If you're not worried about cutting yourself on your axe, it isn't sharp enough.

That Wetterlings mentioned above would be a dandy axe. The Fiskars would be a good one too. Someday I will finally get around to buying a Wetterlings ect as I believe that having good tools pays off.
I have 3 small axes that came from Rural King that are called Boys Axes. I carry one on the 4-wheeler, in the boat ect and they have held up to heavy use on the trapline. They are a great camp axe.
There are other axes that are better suited to different jobs
I much prefer a file to sharpen most any tool as opposed to a grinder. An axe or hatchet I will put in a big vice when I sharpen them. It pays to have several good files in the toolbox.
