I have found a couple of guns on this site i'n the classifieds that i would like to purchase but one of the gentelmen told me it would be illegal for him to sell me the gun because i live i'n illinois. I have found that this site is one of the most helpful sites online to get info everyone seems to be very knowledgeable and willing to help. I am 35 years old and am new to the hobby of guns. I have a FOID card and am legal to own a gun in illinois. Unlike Indiana we can not conceal carry here. I have gone to gun show with friends that also live i'n illinois in Indianapolis and they have purchased guns there no problem and have talked to several friends that have purchased guns from private owners in Indiana. From what I've read online i can purchase guns in Indiana but if it's a rifle i can go buy it from private or retailer. If it's a hand gun i can buy it from a private or retailer but it has to be shipped to some one i'n illinois with a FFL #. so any info on this matter would be helpful because i do want to do everything by the book. I will be checking in to getting my FFL # and my class lll license next week but until then would love some feed back.

You will not find anyone who is comfortable shipping a firearm of any kind over a state line without it going to an FFL. Find an Illinois FFL, offer to pay shipping, and you will likely be able to buy a firearm.

    Hope that helps.

One of my local gun shops told me it was no problem to do but the last guy i spoke to about the gun on here said it couldn't be done. So i was confused i didn't understand that people in Indiana didn't need a FOID card I thought everyone needed that to purchase a gun you can't even touch a gun i'n illinois without a FOID card and a drivers license. I took my wife gun shopping here we had sent out for her card but she hadn't got it yet and the gun shops wouldn't let her touch any gun or Amo since she didn't have it yet. Thank you for your response maybe it was just the individual i was talking with on here didn't feel comftorable. Thanks again

I lived and worked in Illinois over the last year and a half and most of the residents of your state that I talked to were surprised to find out that a FOID type card isn't needed nor required everywhere. It kind of shocked me that your lawmakers have all of you convinced that the FOID is the standard when it is the exception.

Find you a good local FFL and check to make sure that a fire arm is legal in your area before you try to buy one. Some parts of the state  don't allow some types of fire arms.

As a nonresident you can purchase long guns in Indiana, per the "one state away" law, but you can not purchase hand guns, those have to go through FFL. Illinois doesn't reciprocate that, even though it is federal law, I was denied several times on attempted long gun purchases because I didn't possess a FOID.

thank you very much for the response. the gun i was trying to buy from the guy on here was a riffle. I knew it was legal from what i had read (at least I thought) so I wanted to get other oppinions and make sure so I didnt make a mistake and do something illegal.

You did good. Private sales over state lines are very illegal, tell your friends. Vote those idiots in your state out!!! Take care

its always funny to look at a long gun in IL. they ask me for my FOID and I tell them -- dont need one-- they always get a look and I tell them that Im from Indiana...no FOID required...

its a good lesson in watching what people do when you put a rule on them...they start to forget that you dont need a rule to do something...drivers licenses are a good case...

dont need a drivers license to drive same as you dont need a FOID to buy a gun...we just let that slide and forgot what freedom was like...

pretty soon...well forget what it was like to fly without going through a porno scanner...

Ok so I went to four gun dealers in our area today and this is what I found out. For a 10.00-20.00 fee IT IS LEGAL for me to buy a hand gun from Indiana. As long as the indiana hand gun owner sends it from a FFL there to my FFL here then my FFL transfers it to me. That being said some one from Indiana can come over here and purchase a handgun and it can be shipped to a FFL in indiana. Illinois has a three day holding period on handguns any way. As for a riffle I can purchase a riffle in Indiana with no FFL shipping at all. Same for a person from Indiana they can come here and purchase a riffle with no FFL transfer required.

Did my first FFL transfer today after a lot of research and a attorney it is legal for a hand gun purchase, as long as it's transferred thru a FFL. Rifles are a lot simpler. I have also had the attorney to start the proper paper work to get my own FFL. Thanks for all the help guys it was easy to do just gotta find the right people that know what they are doing but again IT IS LEGAL. Wish Illinois had regulations more like the rest of the US states but that another topic lol. When I found out Indianas gun laws my jaw dropped you guys don't know how good you have it makes me want to move back to Indy lol.

How about saling a gun to another hoosier here in Indiana?
Do you have to go thru a FFL or can you do a private sale directly with the buyer (without background check and such).

From what I have read no you don't have to go thru a ffl and from people I have talked to on here all you need is a Indiana drivers license to purchase a gun kinda scary if u ask me how do you guys know your not selling a gun to a criminal ? Here in Illinois you have to have a a FOID card wich if you are carring a FOID card that means you have had a background and check and you are clear if you get in to trouble over here they revoke your card and There is a three day hold on gun purchases from retailer or private. There's pros and cons to both Indiana and Illinois gun laws just never knew they were so different until about a week ago.
