Winchester went crazy with the caliber invention in the '90's. I cannot say any were bad rifles, or bad calibers, but the lack of ammo availability made them almost worthless if you wanted to trade one in.
Remington did not want to be left behind, so they came up with the 7mm Rem Ultra Mag, the .300 RUM, the .338 RUM and the .375 RUM just to have the last dance at the caliber party.
I played with some wildcats like 7mm TCU, 7/30 Waters, 6.5 American, 6.5 X 06, .357 Herrett, .45 Wildley magnum, etc. They were fun, but reloading was mandatory. The 6.5 X 284 finally became standardized. I remember the .222 Remington being the sweetheart for varmint hunters, and now you never see one.
