Not New Mexico, but I went backpacking in the Rockies in 2018 and the stars were amazing once you got way out into the mountains. It's definitely worth a trip out west or somewhere without light pollution to see what the sky really looks like at night.

    THIS..

Off and on for the last few years we have been vacationing and hunting NW of Sundance Wyoming. My 1st year out there, I stepped out of the cabin after 1 AM for a bathroom break and was blown away by the night blown away by the night sky. I stared in awe long after I finished my task. I have never before looked forward to late night pee breaks like I do when I can step out and see that. At a cousins cabin near Devils Tower we also saw the Northern Lights. I love being out there and I do mean OUT THERE. One of those cabins is a 30 min drive off the nearest paved road. Lovely scenery, daytime or night.
