Not having been in the room with the guy, all I can assume is that he went somewhere where there were no other people and that he had a safe area (a sand barrel, whatever), so he could clear the gun and be 100% absolutely sure that if an ND did happen, it wouldn't hurt anyone. Was that really necessary? Probably not, but given that companies are typically paranoid about liability (for good reason), I don't think it's that crazy.

Gander Mountain in Castleton has always had a policy of checking in firearms that you are bringing in. They used to have a fairly decent gunsmith on premise, so I'd bring stuff in for him to fix (hell, the guy worked on and fixed my Webley Mk VI that I couldn't get any other shop in Indianapolis or Lafayette to even look at). He left a few years ago and they switched to shipping guns out for work to another facility (not sure they even take guns in for repair anymore). But when I brought something in, I would always have to check it in at the front desk, they would make sure it was unloaded (right in front of me, never in a back room) and then they would take it back to the gun counter. The same when I picked up, they would take the gun back to the front and then, and only then, would they hand it back to me to take out of the store.

I don't understand the need for someone - anyone - else to handle my firearm. What's wrong with checking it in, and then running a bright-colored zip-tie through the open action? Problem solved, and I don't have to relinquish control of my property to somebody who probably wouldn't even handle it as safely as I would myself.

When I was at the NRA convention in Indy I saw people test fiting holsters with loaded guns and the dealer was helping them. This is not a good idea.I sell holsters at gun shows and the guns are unloaded outside and checked at the door.I still recheck them before we test fit the holsters.Don't be mad at someone who is trying to be safe.Safety is number one on my list.I see people who don't even know how to open and unload their own gun.Just be safe out there.

I guess my smarta** comments in my post on page 1 were kind of directed at the OP. Sorry bout that lol. But in all seriousness...if the holster shopping had to be done this way then the G23 in the OP should've been taken in to GM in a Glock box with the slide locked back. And if someone still wanted to take it into the back room then they're not getting any of my business.

Not anymore. They stopped walking gun purchases to the front too. You get your gun at the gun counter and are trusted to walk to the front of the store with it by yourself.

Not a problem for the smarta** comments... I can handle it. Your statement is accurate though; I should have taken it in with the box and slide locked back..bla bla bla...however they could have easily checked it in front of me without any issues. I guess paranoia got the best of them...or likely just common sense safety, which is good by me.

why do you need to test fit a fourteen dollar holster?

For that very reason - it is $14.00 and will likely fit like sh*t; I didn't feel like purchasing, taking it home to test fit (or even to my truck) and having to return/exchange if it truly was sh*t. I would expect a $50+ holster to be quality and fitment to be all good, thus no need to test fit. I guess my concern was that this particular holster is not specifically made for a Glock pistol, it's made for various pistols of similar length/width. Regardless, it was just personal preference.

I'll bet that guy took your weapon back there and installed the obama device. When triggered all firearms installed with this device become inoperable.

Went to the Castleton GM to see if there were any good deals since everything in the store is 10% off. Nope, still over priced. I took a pic of their gun policy sign while there.

Screwed the pic up. Couldn't get it turned correctly. Must be an iPhone thing? GM sign.JPG

If I missed a sign like this one at the Avon store, then my attention must have been on something else while walking through the door. In that case, shame on me. Thanks for posting this!

Last week I received a new gun via an FFL transfer. I took the pistol into the Castleton location in it's factory case in order to find a soft pistol case (which they didn't have). I checked in up front, and took it the firearms counter. They then took it to the back room while I shopped.. When I couldn't find what I needed I asked the guy helping me if he could go get the gun for me while I grabbed some ear plugs. When I went up to the counter, they had my pistol out of the case and were fondling it. I believe I had caught them by surprise. Not a major deal I suppose, but I would have asked me first.

And remind me again: why would I trust such people to take possession of my firearm?

    No thanks.

If that happened to me, I would demand that the manager allow me henceforth to keep possession of my properly secured firearms (since his employees have proven themselves incompetent in that regard), or else I would take my business elsewhere.

it takes a lot to get my blood boiling but I might've went apesh*t ballistic had that been me/my gun...

GM in Greenwood is loaded with non-gun knowledgeable employees.
I got "swept" in there by some "cheeky" fellow TWICE. I politely mentioned I didn't appreciate his lack of concern for gun safety. All I got was a sheepish grin and "Oops, sorry" in a very nonchalant way.
I wasn't the only one that noticed that. I heard a couple of waiting customers commenting about the lack of safety or professionalism shown.
On the upside.....Before Christmas I bought 3 pairs of boots on a super sale. The price was ridiculously cheap. There must be a hellova mark up on these

I just stepped up and said "Are you fondling my gun?" which got me an apology. Then I proceeded to rifle through my case to make sure the extra springs I had tucked up in the lid were still there....

I buy accessories and what not there, and boots too, but not firearms. Good place to hold one and then call your LGS and get it for cheaper!

I can practically walk to Plainfield Shooting Supplies. Bob always has the best prices to begin with. No need to hassle with that sort of nonsense.

    caveat:
as much as I may act all high and mighty lol I am guilty of spending plenty of money in my local Gander (key chains, belts, t shirts, gifts, whatever, etc. never a gun. some ammo...and maybe a sling or two)
