There exists the possibility that I may be moving to Indiana. I have been going through the state laws and the FAQs, but would like to have a few points clarified.

    1) Would I have to have all my firearms sent through an FFL or could I drive them up with me? Could they travel with a professional moving company (not saying I would do this, just curious)? What about ammo?

    2) From what I have read, it only takes about a week to get an Indiana license. I have three separate non-resident carry licenses that allow me to carry in Indiana (you have a popular state). Would I be able to carry solely on that until the new license and/or residency is established? If I move there, I may still be on the lease in my current state until the end of the month. Would that make a difference in my favor?

    3) I have read some things that would indicate to me that Indiana may not be exactly carry friendly and some things that indicate it may be. Exactly how carry friendly is the state?

    1) Just bring them with you? Why all the secret squirrel stuff?

    2) When you say "license" do you mean LTCH? If so, I don't know how how it takes. My lifetime was 4 weeks.

Once you are a resident, you need an Indiana LTCH. No bs parlor games, go get the license.

    3) What have you read that says Indiana is not a carry friendly state? Are you reading that rubbish in Boston T. Party's book?

777 :) You got 'em, they're yours, just bring 'em. The LTCH will cost some money, but you can get a lifetime one and not have to worry about it ever again, at least here. There are some ignorant LEOs that will harass you due to misunderstanding the laws, but where can you not find those? Statewise, we're about as unwedged as you can expect to find; no local shenanigans are allowed, that kind of thing. You should be comfortable here.

    1. Bring them on over...You only need to do a transfer if you are selling it/gifting it.

    2. It really only takes about a week nowadays. Just get it as quick as possible. I think there is something in the IC that says if you aren't a resident you can carry with one of those licenses/permits, but it's probably a headache to find out everything, so just apply ASAP and you'll have it really quick.

    3. I've lived here all of my life and I consider Indiana carry friendly...If you OC you can run the possibility of bumping into an ignorant LEO, but other than that you should be good-to-go.

    :dunno:

I think 1911 is pretty easy to remember

Yeah, for the couple handfuls of INGO members that can read binary.:):

Great to hear. Thanks to you and everyone else who responded so quickly. I'm a 99.9% CC person, so no worries there. I was reading about the lifetime license. That's a good deal. We had proposed something similar, but I don't think it went anywhere.

    1. No problem and welcome to INGO.

    2. You can now apply online anywhere in Indiana and if you go through L1 Identity Solutions (it's an extra ~$11.00, but definitely worth it) you can have your lifetime LTCH in anywhere from 4 to 10 days for just under $136.00.

Three of my friends have recently got their LTCHs and IIRC, when they applied online there was a link at the end of the application that sent them to the L1 website where they could set up an appointment to get fingerprinted.

From the time of the prints to the time they got that pink piece of paper in the mail was like 3 days for one of them, 5 days and 10 days.

From where would you be moving and to where, here?

    On to your questions:
    1) Just bring them with you. They're yours. While traveling, however, make sure of your route. Your three other carry licenses might not cover the states through which you'll be traveling to get here. (I use USAcarry.com)
If you're not covered, say for example, coming through IL, you'll need to unload and case your weapons and place them where they're not readily accessible in your vehicle while in those states. Do note that if traveling through OH, if your current licenses don't cover you, rounds in a magazine are considered a loaded weapon as well.

    2) Establishing residency. From the state statute:
    IC 9-13-2-78
    Indiana resident
Sec. 78. "Indiana resident" refers to a person who is one (1) of the following:
    (1) A person who has been living in Indiana for at least one hundred eighty-three (183) days during a calendar year and who has a legal residence in another state. However, the term does not include a person who has been living in Indiana for any of the following purposes:
    (A) Attending a postsecondary educational institution.
    (B) Serving on active duty in the armed forces of the United States.
    (2) A person who is living in Indiana if the person has no other legal residence.

    (3) A person who is registered to vote in Indiana.

    (4) A person who has a child enrolled in an elementary or a secondary school located in Indiana.

    (5) A person who has more than one-half (1/2) of the person's gross income (as defined in Section 61 of the Internal Revenue Code) derived from sources in Indiana using the provisions applicable to determining the source of adjusted gross income that are set forth in IC 6-3-2-2. However, a person who is considered a resident under this subdivision is not a resident if the person proves by a preponderance of the evidence that the person is not a resident under subdivisions (1) through (4).

    (6) A person who:
    (A) is enrolled as a student of a truck driver training school;
    (B) has legal residence in another state but is living in Indiana temporarily for the express purpose of taking a course of study from the truck driver training school; and
    (C) intends to return to the person's state of residence upon completion of the course of study of the truck driver training school.
So, as I read it, if you're on a lease elsewhere, you would be able to claim to not be a resident here through the short time until your LTCH arrives. I am not a lawyer, but I can read the plain text and that's how I'd read it. :)

    3) Carry friendly? It's easier to list the places here you can't carry than it is to list the ones you can, if that's any indication. You need a recognized license to open-carry, but once you have it, there's no legal difference between OC and CC. That's not an issue for you, you said.

    • No federal buildings
    • No schools (k-12), including Head Start, preschools, private schools, as well as school buses or other properties being used by schools for school functions. That latter term is not defined in statute or case law so far, so "caveat porto" (which is probably grammatically incorrect Latin :dunno:) You can carry on your person if you're driving someone else to or from a K-12 school, but you cannot exit the vehicle, even without the gun on you.
    • No shipping ports
    • Not on state fairgrounds during state fair
    • No airport sterile areas (that's federal as well as state)
    • No riverboat casinos.
    • Some localities may restrict buildings with courtrooms in them.
    • Lastly, private properties may restrict if they wish to do so, but a mere sign "No guns" has no force of law. You just have to leave if you're asked to do so, or you're subject to arrest for trespassing.

That's about it. We have no laws against carrying in banks or bars or restaurants that sell alcohol or public gatherings or sporting events, other than the trespassing thing, and that's not specific to a gun issue.

    Hope this helps!

    Blessings,
    Bill

Good points to keep in mind. Fortunately I'm coming from the deep south and have a straight shot in states that I have reciprocity with.

Yea, it occurred to me this morning to check the states that the Brady Campaign hates. Indiana is right up there. Their list sure is useful. Wish I had thought of that earlier.

    Cheers.

Fortunately I'm coming from the deep south and have a straight shot in states that I have reciprocity with.

There is a lot of confusion in the South between Indiana and Illinois. Many there believe that Chicago is in Indiana or that Indiana has the gun laws of Illinois.

I was at a martial arts seminar in Knoxville a few years ago and someone asked me where I was from. I replied "Indiana", the then told me how he was in my state and it was snowing in July. I shook my head and asked which city, he replied "Chicago".:D
