The original stock on this rifle had been the victim of at least a couple crude attempts at refinishing and was beyond repair. I considered a polymer stock but decided to make my own instead. Originally it was going to be walnut, because I know I have a chunk of it around here somewhere, but I ran across this piece of mahogany while looking and decided to use it. I made a couple small changes to the stock, the main one being that while I am going to use the original butt plate I moved it back about 1 1/2".

A while back I shortened the barrel on another SKS, kind of a homemade paratrooper, might do that to this one too.

This wood is left over from a restoration of a mahogany Chris Craft, of which I have done a few, but have always stained as that was what CC did. I like the look of it with a natural finish. The extra length on the stock makes it much more comfortable too, pull length went from 12 1/2" to 14".

And a few of the finished rifle.

I didn't take many pictures while I was doing this, but here's one.

That's some impressive work right there! Probably one of the nicest stocks on any SKS, anywhere.

    Beautiful? How much for #2?

I'm only kind of kidding. I love the SKS and that is beautiful, though putting one together would probably cost more than I wanna put into one.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments :)

As far as making any more of these goes, who knows, make me an offer, what have you got to lose? :dunno:
