I'm applying for a License to Carry Handguns (getting the electronic fingerprinting done next week).

I plan on picking up a gun before it all goes through, though, so I still have to deal with the NICS at the gunshop, I suppose.

The first question: How long does a NICS check take? (I.e., will I have to go BACK to the shop in a day or two to pick up the gun?)

Second question: If I have an LtCH, do I still need to deal with a NICS check every time I purchase?

I'd appreciate the benefit of advice and info on this one. :)

    Thanks!

NICS takes 2-3 minutes, unless they decide to "hold" your approval for a day or so. Not typical, though. You should be able to take your purchase home right away.

Any, yeah, NICS every time you buy from a dealer. Annoying, but, yeah.

The NICS check and your LTCH are not related in any way.
    Two separate things.
The NICS check can take up to three working days.

    LTCH is state level.
    NICS is federal level.

Yeah, having a LTCH does not negate the NICS requirement. You'll still have to get that "instant" check every time you purchase from a federally-licensed dealer.

    Again, many thanks, folks.

I was planning to hit the gun store tomorrow, but... well, Columbus Day and all that. I have no illusions of a rapid NICS check on a holiday.

Here's the relevant code section found here...

    IC 35-47-2.5-4
Dealer requirements before sale, rent, trade, or transfer
Sec. 4. (a) A dealer may not sell, rent, trade, or transfer from the dealer's inventory a handgun to a person until the dealer has done all of the following:
    (1) Obtained from the prospective purchaser a completed and signed Form 4473 as specified in section 3 of this chapter.
    (2) Contacted NICS:
    (A) by telephone; or
    (B) electronically;
to request a background check on the prospective purchaser.
    (3) Received authorization from NICS to transfer the handgun to the prospective purchaser.
    (b) The dealer shall record the NICS transaction number on Form 4473 and retain Form 4473 for auditing purposes.
    As added by P.L.17-1997, SEC.8. Amended by P.L.190-2006, SEC.8.

As an aside, my GWCL (Georgia) allowed me to purchase a weapon w/o an NICS check as carriers of the GWCL have already been vetted by the GBI. The dealer simply had to note on the 4473 that the purchaser had a valid GWCL and to write down that number. In reality it only saved the few minutes that the NICS check took.
