Always enjoy your info, JeepHammer!!!! 11b, men's dept. of the Army, here. Like your comment about the silicone grease and the Infared filters to be used with lasers. Also setting the solar yard lights out at known distances. Keep up the posts!!!

Not being a stranger to a soldering iron, I bought 100 infrared LEDs for like $5.
Replaced the 'White' (visible) light LEDs with IR, went out and stuck the self charging sidewalk lights in metal fence posts, in trees/stumps, etc.
Since the usual crack heads won't take anything that 'Doesn't Work' and they can't see the IR light, they don't steal them.

When we hog hunt, we set them out at ranges from shooting positions (50 yards, 100 yards, etc) so the bullet drop compensators can be used, even with no depth perception (you don't get any depth perception with IR or Thermal, can't tell ranges at all).

EBay has rings of IR lights from night vision on camera for dirt cheap, and they work well as range increasing light also.
Some folks won't know how to wire the solar panel/batter, but if you can you can area light about anyplace you want to see into, no matter how far. 'Range' isn't an issue, the amount of photons coming to your device from you target area is the problem,
Flood that area with IR light and you can see it from a LONG WAY away with a simple NV device.
