For those who might travel across the line I see 2 long established shops are now gone.
James M Keher Guns: Owner passed away this Spring.
Farr and Sons: Owner retired last year.

I recently saw an ad for The Firing Pin on a cable channel.

I've been to the firing pin a couple times. Busy with locals usually so don't be in a hurry, but decent place overall. Decent selection of ammo and guns for a smaller place.

I used to buy all my guns from the firing pin. I like them.

This is not Niles (MUCH further north) But Bob's Gun Shop in Alpena is a great place to go and spend a day. I had seen it, just outside the gate of the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, several time but didn't have a chance to stop in until one day last year. It's like an original and very personal version of Cabela's with a great selection of firearms including many rare and expensive arms. We went one afternoon during the week and spent hours there (one of the people with us didn't own a single firearm but is a history buff) and no one was bored. Bob spent hours talking to us, telling stories and talking about the history of firearms and pulling out high end pieces to let us ogle the fine wood (one was in a case that cost $5k) and when I wanted to buy one of his weapons he went to pains saying that we didn't need to buy anything, he was just glad we stopped in. I had to convince him I actually wanted the gun and wasn't just buying it to be nice.

I didn't try to haggle so he dropped the price and threw in a gun case at checkout...and it wasn't overpriced to start with.

On our walls and in our cases are
over 1500 firearms from the finest manufacturers, including Winchester,
Beretta, Taurus, Kimber, Marlin, Remington, Weatherby, Ruger, Smith and
Wesson, and more. Bob's is a full-line Browning dealer. If your passion
is high-end double shotguns, you'll appreciate our selection from such
names as Holland & Holland, Parker and Frelach. Those who enjoy
vintage firearms will be amazed at our selection of antique and
collectible long guns and hand guns. For those whose sport is
muzzeloaders, we stock a wide variety of arms from such great names as
Thompson Center and Knight. The only way to really appreciate what we
offer is to see it, so please stop on in.

To further serve our customers, we
do routine maintenance and repairs on firearms, and also offer full
off-site gunsmithing services. Whatever you need done to your firearm,
we can help.

We're here to serve you from 9am to 6pm Monday through Friday, and Saturdays from 9am to 5pm.

To get to Bob's from Alpena, just
take M 32 two miles west of Walmart, and you'll find us on the south
side of the road. The experience is well worth the trip!
