Friday night I had to spend a couple hours at work, so on my way home, I thought I'd pick up some flowers for my wife because she puts up with a lot, plus we were having company on Saturday and she loves it when she can show her friends how much I love her. I stopped at Martin's supermarket on the west end of town (I live a couple miles outside town, in a nicer area). I was OCing my S&W model 327 (I've posted it in other threads) in a Desantis Speed Scabbard.
I walked in and straight over to the flower cooler and picked out a dozen roses. (BTW, they're a whole lot cheaper now than they were in February, if any of you are looking for bonus points toward your next gun purchase.) I took the roses over to one of the registers, and a decent sized fella came over to me and said, "you're going to have to cover that up. You can't show your gun in here."
    I said, "why?"
"Because you can't carry like that?"
I said, "Oh, is it posted somewhere? I didn't see any signs when I came in. Is it a store policy? I'm licensed to carry by the state of Indiana, and with a license it's legal to carry open or concealed."
"Yeah, I know it's legal, but it's store policy. You're right, we should post it."
At this point, I covered my revolver and continued asking questions. The manager came over and started talking as well.
Manager: I know it's legal to carry, but if you carry like that, they won't let you in any stores.
Me: uh...yeah, Meijer doesn't care. Kroger doesn't care. Walmart doesn't care. I've carried like this all over town and you're the only one that seems to have an issue with it.
At that point, the security guy says to me "hey, let's go outside" so I start walking with him. The manager says, "aren't you going to pay and take your flowers?" and I say, "No, you won't be getting any of my money."
So I walked outside with the security guard and we started talking. Turns out he's an off-duty cop from Walkerton, just trying to make ends meet. We started talking about guns and stuff; he asked me what I was carrying and seemed interested that I carry a revolver. We talked about political correctness and about how the only time most people see guns is when they're used by criminals to harm people and when they're used by the press to sell commercials and advertising and sensationalize their writing. He had to get back inside the store, but I hope he takes the things we talked about back to the manager and tells him how messed up their policy against OC is.
So I tucked my shirt in behind my revolver so I'd be carrying openly again, then headed across the street to Kroger. They didn't have any flowers, but I talked to a couple nice employees who were sorry they didn't have flowers. They made no mention of my gun.
Is there anything else I should have said to the manager or done differently?

If you'd like to discuss OC/CC, I'd be happy to do so here: https://www.indianagunowners.com/fo...lf_defense/37307-common_oc_cc_threadjack.html but not in this thread.

Yea, I work for Martins in Elkhart.

The "Decent sized fella" that approached you was one of our "inventory controll specialists". Most of them are either off duty or retired LEOS whos chief duty is to catch shoplifters, but they also serve a security function. Every store has one on duty at all times; they dress in plain cloths and blend in well.

There is apparently some confusion on the issue of OC within the company management:

I noticed a guy OC'ing in our store a few weeks ago. I said something to our on duty specialist out of curiosity and asked him what the policy is (since its not posted). He told me that Martins is "100% for the customer and his rights", and that as long as they have a valid permit and are not causing a scene, then they (security guys) are supposed to leave you alone. The guys here in E-town have zero problems with OC, but then again, we have a different set of managers. Some of the management staff at South Bend stores can be REAL dicks.

He also told me that, as an employee, I was not allowed to carry unless I talked to the corporate dirrector of security and got clearence from him, permit or not.

My guess is that an ignorant manager or a Nerveous Nancy reported you as a "man with a gun", and that the security guy was then obligated to say something to you. I carry when Im not on the clock, even when Im in the store. If I were you I would just keep carrying; they wont do anything to you unless your causing a ruckuss.

Thanks, Chalupa. Yeah, I think it was the nervous manager that told the security guy to talk to me.
Also, I have OCd in the Martin's @ Ireland and Miami in South Bend and haven't had a problem.

The security contractor that I worked for assigned both the loss prevention officers as well as the armed security officers for the same stores and locations. The LP's weren't even allowed to carry when under the liability of the store. Now when we were contracting for other places, we were on our own liability insurance and we could all carry.

As far as consumers, I don't know why some sheeple and sheeple management are crazy. There should be educational programs which would let everyone know that it is legal to carry a handgun openly with a LTCH :ingo:

I think you handled it perfectly. The manager knows he lost sale over it. The ppl at the meijer never say jack about my (or my wifes) OC'ing... if they did they'd have a cart with $100-$300 worth of groceries left sitting there, lol. When we shop, we go big ;)

I won't shop at a store that won't let me carry*.

I will say I make one exception and that is costco. I hate sams club and their isn't a BJ's around here so I have to deal with costco... for now. As soon as a BJ's opens I'll cancel my costco and let them know why, till then, I cover up.

    will argue for sammiches.

Well done. You made your points without being confrontational and left the manager to contemplate his reasons for (and the consequences of) driving a sale away.

cce- Wanna OC at the fancy pants granger one? You would think that the one you were in would be used to seeing guns. Next time just stick it in your pants, the proper holster threw them.

My thoughts exactly!!! If they see your pants 12 inches below your waste and your underware showing with a gun inbetween, they wont say a word to you.

I should've gotten that manager's name last friday night.

I am perfectly happy giving my money to Kroger across the street, as I did tonight. Open carrying.

    :D

If I do go back, though, I'll call corporate first, just to make sure they don't leave it up to each individual store or something.

Somebody should open carry at the Martins in Granger. I live literally 1/4 mile from that place and I hate going in there. I'd love to hear about what peoples reactions would be.

If I ever go over there, I'll do it. We don't really do much shopping over there though.

I have OC'd at the yuppie hangout Chipotle in Mishawaka though. Nobody said anything.

I OC most places and rarely have a problem the only places I CC are Dicks (they have a sign that says I have to check my firearm at the desk) and UP Mall (simon owned property and no firearms sign at the door). Also if I'm on a date (don't wanna scare them with the SIZE of my pistol). If you see a red jeep with a INGO sticker on the back bumper in a parking lot I'm in there and most likley OCing.

Sureshot129, I called and talked to the manager at Dicks shortly after that sign went up. He told me it is for guns that are being returned or for repairs. I told him that they needed to tell the 'cutsey' chick at the door that. They have no problem otherwise.
Also, I would love to OC at Martins in Granger, but my permit says 'Concealed', although I can make it print real good. :). Later, Bob
