Many (most?) larger hospitals will have security escort you to your car when you work night shift. This is the case at the hospital I'm affiliated with (Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany). That's pretty non-lethal.

She cant carry because she doesn't have her LTCH or is it forbidden for her to carry a gun at her work?
A LTCH would also be required for a Taser.

Pepper spray is ineffective on a lot of people and often results in getting it in your own eyes, a stun gun will only be effective at close range which is the opposite of what you want. The personal taser guns are not bad but take a precise shot. The Taser International C2 is not a bad choice because it delivers a continuous shock for 30 seconds from 15 feet away, it is a little pricey but is the closest to law enforcement Tasers.

No license to carry openly or concealed with this model.

Parkour...not joking. A guy at work joked about having his kid trained in Parkour to evade would be trouble. I think its a great idea.

Thank you for the responses. I think a taser is the way to go.

How did you get that from this thread?

    1. She would still need a LTCH to carry a tazer
    2. Very limited chances to make an effective hit
    2. Only effective while voltage is being administered
    4. Very limited range with non-LEO cartridges
    5. Slower to engage than pepper spray (unless carried in a holster on the body)

Police officers successfully use tazers by having the means to physically subdue the person immediately following the tazer application, usually while still using the tazer for compliance until the person is successfully restrained (and sometimes afterward just for fun... Am I right guys? Heh, you don't have to answer that

). Police officers also have the option of lethal force if needed should the non-lethal prove ineffective.

IMO, a good quality OC pepper spray is a much more plausible defense option for someone not willing to carry a firearm. It can be carried in hand ready to go when she walks to her car, and the effects last plenty long enough to get away from the threat and seek help.

I could be wrong but I think the Taser is classified as a handgun and therefore you need a LTCH to carry. No matter if you get the X26 ir the C2 model.

That's what I was thinking. Also , only ONE shot. Although the C2 can be used as a "stun gun" after the shot is firec, does she really want to have to be at contact distance to use the thing? How do you train/practice with it? All this for about $375+. Very cost INeffective imho.

    Living Will

Any suggestions on what to get her to carry instead.

Perhaps a copy of her living will so when she is beaten into a coma she will have already determined when she wants the plug pulled. She has already made the decision not to use all tools available for her personal defense, this is just one more decision she has to make.

This comment may sound a little harsh but she needs to understand her decisions not to arm herself have consequences.

Many (most?) larger hospitals will have security escort you to your car when you work night shift.

You will need to convince her to use this service too. Requires patience as she will have to wait for the escort sometimes. She will have to get over the idea that she is inconveniencing the security personel. Getting an escort when leaving is easier than coordinating an escort when arriving. An alternative or additional option would be a buddy system where she arrives and leaves with one or two coworkers who are on the same shift.

^^^^^ This. We all know it's hard enough dealing with one woman...who would want to have to deal with more than one ? :dunno:

And that's all I have to say about that. (In my best Forrest Gump voice)

Between pepper spray and a taser, why not both? Say pepper spray on your keys and taser in the purse or pocket. Both are small and convenient! If she ever needs one or both, it will be worth it!

A couple of years ago I was preparing for a camping trip in west Virginia. I bought a can of bear spray from gander mountain in Castleton. It was $40. It said it would spray 35 feet for 30 seconds.

That hair-spray sized can now sits behind the receptionists desk where I used to work. She had commented that some guys had her spooked one morning early before anybody else was at work, so i gave it to her. I truly feel sorry for anybody who comes in there to make trouble.

It was plainly marked not to be used on people, but i believe that this is the general rule of thumb for firearms too.

Why non-lethal? Because she is opposed to use of deadly force or she simply won't carry a firearm and that pretty much eliminates all the lethal options available to citizens?

Since most of the other options available to her require getting up close and personal with the bad guy, I would recommend some serious self defense training. That way when she can't deploy the defensive weapon in time, she will not be at the complete mercy of the douche bag assaulting her.

I guess her best defense is going to be pepper spray and escort. I have tried talking her into a small caliber handgun. But no. I will just remind her of situational awareness. And if something dosent look right or feel right. To trust her instincts. Thank you for all your help. Ill see if she can leave with a buddy too. That would relax my mind too.
