I used to hunt rattlers in CO back in the '70's while out on training exercises at Ft Carson. I had an ammo pouch with the interior webbing removed that was just the right size to hold a snub nose 9 shot 22mag revolver. They were good to add to the constant diet of C-rats. It's why I still say chicken tastes like rattle snake. Other snakes I like to have around, the poisonous ones though, they end up as dinner.

Should I draw any conclusions from your abbreviation including 'rat'?

Why do you think we were out catching snakes? :): No telling what was in those cans. There was this chocolate cake like substance that almost killed one of my tank commanders...do not bite into that thing without a lot of water handy.

First cousin down in Paoli found two big black rat snakes in one of their bird houses. The 4 baby birds that were in it had disappeared. She encouraged the snakes to head toward the woods.

    Not far from the tree
That little Garter is a real beauty.
I used to catch and release them all the time when I was a kid.
The only objectionable thing they do is eat insect-eating frogs and toads, but they eat so many insects of their own, plus rodents, that I always go out of my way to avoid harming them.

Garter snakes are usually ill tempered and smell bad. Not a bit afraid to poop on you if you pick them up. Only time I've ever been bitten was saving a garter snake's bacon in a hay field one day.

Yep. About 5 seconds after this picture was snapped, it bit me. Scared me pretty good. He did leave a bad smell on my hands too.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about the pooping thing.
The only time that I ever saw a Garter bite anyone was the time that my older brother tried to catch a very pregnant (she must have been at least two inches thick!) one with a forked stick, not intending to harm her at all, but she was super aggressive (totally uncharacteristic to how this particular species usually behaves), and right when he thought he had her head pinned enough to grab her there to pick her up, she swung sideways and nailed his thumb, drawing a pretty decent bit of blood.
Realizing that she was so defensive because she must have instinctively known she was pregnant, he dropped the stick and we all walked off to leave her alone.
We all three of us (my younger brother was there, too) had to admire the ferocity with which she defended herself.

When my kids were younger, we kept a garter snake for part of a summer. I tried several different things to get it to eat, and finally discovered that it loved goldfish. I'd put a live goldfish in it's water dish and it would immediately dive it's head into the water, and usually after a couple of tries, it would come up holding the fish by the head and swallow it. We fed it a lot, mostly because the kids loved to watch that snake "go fishing".

Took my Mom and my kids to Lincoln Park Zoo.
We were in the children zoo building.
A zoo worker girl took out a 4 ft Rat snake out of the cage.
    A vary large crowd gathered.
The girl walked to a Demonstration area.
My Mom was right in the path to the area.
When my Mom seen the girl and then the snake.
Well I just describe it as, Noah parted the Red Sea.
