I used to teach lifesaving merit badge for the boy scouts.
Going in the water with no floatation device was the option you were supposed to use LAST.
Because the rescuer often needs to be rescued.

Just about 600km into our hike from SW France westward across Spain to the Atlantic ocean. About 2 weeks and 300+ km to go, then we turn back east and come inland to get to an airport to come home. Looks like we will be home about July 29.
