Cops take down drugstore robber carrying GPS-tagged pill bottle - New York News

Gotta love the decoy OxyContin bottle!

four officers taken to the hospital to be treated for ringing in the ears??? I would think this is common enough that there would be a treatment (or lack thereof) protocol in place already.

just goes to show unprotected shooting can really harm the 'ol hearing, at least briefly. I should get some better protection for my home setup.

I have always wondered why they don't let LEOs carry handguns with surpressors, actually.

How dare you suggest something so EEEEEEEVIIIIILLLL! If guns are devil spawn then suppressors are the Devil himself!

All the Kool-Aid aside, I could imagine the public freak out of the police now suddenly sporting "silent" weapons and the assumed rise in killings by cops that nobody would notice.

To chime in as well, another cog in the machine that picked up a goodly case of tinnitus while in the Air Force. No planes though, but you try hanging out in a laboratory full of noisy machines for 4 years. Tinnitus isn't a hearing "injury" like loss of hearing from constant exposure to loud noises, but an "imprint" if you will from hearing a noise for too long. Think burning a screen into a plasma TV.

Yep tinnitus. I live with it every day secondary to my military duty with 40th armor. Even with ear protection is of little use when the main gun, ie 105 millimeter, goes off. Welcome to my world. Just deal with it.

Its more to document the injury, not to actually fix it. On the job injuries usually require it.

Occupational health, yes. Hospital for this? I dunno... Injury documention consists of "patient states ears are ringing after exposure to loud noise". Any exam at the time will be the same as the next day.

Just trying to save some $$ and place some common sense out there about hitting up ERs. I know the story didn't say they went to the ER, but you know they likely did.

I have tinnitus as well. Not sure why, except for maybe wearing headphones in my youth...music cranked to the max, of course. I can hear a constant high-pitched noise right now, over the radio and fan. My right ear seems worse. Man, it's annoying. :(

A very loud dual-amp car stereo in my old Jeep, as well as shooting without protection, has left me with mild tinnitus. It's not as bad as it could be, but certain sounds just don't come through clearly, especially those with the same pitch as .22LR and .45acp, both of which I can now fire without it bothering me in the least.

That's common (though not advised) with rimfire, even though the .22LR is about 126dB, but .45acp hurts most people.

    I miss my hearing range.

My hearing is great unless the tone is in the same range as the high-pitched buzz that's already in my ears constantly. Then I don't hear it.

My tinnitus came before I started shooting, BTW. I never was one to listen to music that loud, so I don't know what brought it on. It seems to be aggravated by caffeine, but we simply are not going there.

I cannot comment on NYPD's SOP's for an on duty injury.

Don't much care about NYPD hearing loss, but since there appears to be a lot of us with tinnitus, thought I'd post! I have horrible tinnitus, and as snapdragon said, it's really bad when the pitch of what I need to hear matches the ringing. Too many years of air tools and loud music! I also have hearing loss in my right ear, bad enough that it always sounds like it's full of water! It's all been getting worse, as of late, so I made an appointment for my local Ear Nose and Throat specialist this thursday. I'll try to remember to post up, if they tell me anything can be done for the hearing loss OR for the tinnitus. Sounds like we could all use it!
