Obama Can Shut Down Internet For 4 Months Under New Emergency Powers

‘Kill switch’ bill approved, moves to Senate floor

    Paul Joseph Watson

    Friday, June 25, 2010

President Obama will be handed the power to shut down the Internet for at least four months without Congressional oversight if the Senate votes for the infamous Internet ‘kill switch’ bill, which was approved by a key Senate committee yesterday and now moves to the floor.

The Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, which is being pushed hard by Senator Joe Lieberman, would hand absolute power to the federal government to close down networks, and block incoming Internet traffic from certain countries under a declared national emergency.

Despite the Center for Democracy and Technology and 23 other privacy and technology organizations sending letters to Lieberman and other backers of the bill expressing concerns that the legislation could be used to stifle free speech, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee passed in the bill in advance of a vote on the Senate floor.

In response to widespread criticism of the bill, language was added that would force the government to seek congressional approval to extend emergency measures beyond 120 days. Still, this would hand Obama the authority to shut down the Internet on a whim without Congressional oversight or approval for a period of no less than four months.

The Senators pushing the bill rejected the claim that the bill was a ‘kill switch’ for the Internet, not by denying that Obama would be given the authority to shut down the Internet as part of this legislation, but by arguing that he already had the power to do so.

They argued “That the President already had authority under the Communications Act to “cause the closing of any facility or station for wire communication” when there is a “state or threat of war”, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

No way they can pull this off. Even if it is approved, how the heck would they pull it off? Everything connects to the internet nowadays...

The Obamatard won't do it. If he did, how would he keep in touch with all his Al Qaeda friends on Facebook? :dunno:

If it is only limiting connections to individual nations, someone could walk right around it using a proxy.

The issue is never the issue. It's not about limiting connections to individual nations. But how well do you think a complete takeover of one of the most common forms of communications would go over?

It's to Crush Dissent so the internet will be in lock step with the propaganda on your TV. Does anyone remember (over 10 years ago) when you could lookup general information on a topic or a specific thing without getting bombarded page after page with corporations getting front row and the link repeated on following pages (sign up,buy here, buy now, We got it, free shipping)

Where exactly is Obama 'claiming' the power as the OP suggests? The article is saying this is a senate vote.

I am sure if it does go through you can bet he will use it at least once. Just like shutting down oil drilling in the gulf over one spill, he is a power freak. It's for our own good.

There is just too much bad mouthing of dear leader on internet forums. Something must be done to stop it. I am so glad that the revered one will be able to clean up his image by taking down this distressing information. We must for "less speech" not more as some radicals propose.

    mmm, delicious pie.

I wouldn't even put the slice at 10%, though.
Maybe five. Not even a big enough chunk to be filling, just a tease.

    Now I'm hungry.

Obama used the internet during his campaign to extensively promote all of the lies he was spewing forth to get people to follow him. I would not doubt that he will try to halt all the truths being told on the internet now and also stop the opposition from using a valuable communication tool. The internet has really opened up the public awareness of what is actually going on and this would be one way for him to go back to concealing things from the American people.

Well, now that much of the banking and automotive industry is already nationalized, and healthcare is in the process of the same, why would the internet be any different?

 The Bill itself gives the POTUS the power to shut down the networks. I don't know how it's possible, but apparently it's possible.

The worst part of this is just imagine if another "outbreak" happens and they shut down the internet? The only info we'll get is through the media. Then you'll wish you had people like WHAT HAPPENED to give you the scoop on a possible government take over or something.

If they get this power, the POTUS can shut down the internet at his whim, legal or not. We can't let this happen.

Don't tell me you CAN'T do anything about it either.
